So, I am trying to get my friend to play BrokenLens with me but he doesn’t have an XBox live account. He does have a regular XBox account though. So my question is, do you need an XBox live account to play servers or just an XBox account?

No, you don't need Xbox Live, you just need an account. Under this are the instructions too set it up with Brokenlens.

1. Complete Making Xbox Account
2. Go to "Minecraft"
3. Push: "Log in to Xbox"
4. Log-in/Select your account
5. Once it is set up, go to Brokenlens servers
6. use /login to create your username & password

U can join with 1.1 without an Xbox live account

you cant join without xbox live acc, but if he has xbox acc its probably with access to join servers.
