Note: plural animals because each animal has its own flying/swimming patterns, and gaining the power should allow you to be a complete master at flying/swimming. This is choosing to swim or fly as a superpower, not any sort of equipment, just to clarify =]

Since I already know "how to fly" [a plane], I would choose to Swim like any sea animals. In particular - penguins.

Edit: Another reason why swimming like a sea creature(s) would be handy because if the plane ditch's into the ocean or sail boat sinks, i could take advantage of the ability.

And during the hellish hot summers where I live, staying cool is a must, especially living along a coastline.

NO!!! You can't fly freely with an airplane. That's why I stated with the aid of no equipment, which also includes planes. But your swimming point is valid.
