It’s been several years since my death. After walking through to my afterlife, it’s been rather pleasant. The afterlife is just another normal society, except your jobs get assigned to you. I’ve been assigned several different jobs, slowly working my way up to the top. My current job now is guardian angel, and I absolutely love it. I get to see the world I once lived in while out on duty. Honestly, I kind of missed the place.
Today I was assigned to watch over a teenager named Kevin. I was elated to have him, since he was my best friend when I was still alive. My heart was hit with a twinge of sadness. I really wish I could talk to him like before and just joke around. I couldn’t do so for obvious reasons, but another was because he was about to die. Guardian angels had a sense of when the person they are protecting will die, and my sense was going off. I was going to have to find a place near him where I could protect him. Guardian angels were able to be invisible until they found a place best fit for their current situation. So when I find a spot to protect Kevin from whatever will harm him, I will be visible.
I found myself walking just behind him. I had a gut feeling that something would come from the front or the side, and this also hid me from him for the time being. It was a peaceful night, so nothing seemed harmful in any way. This made the hairs on my neck stand up. Whatever was coming, it would be fast.
Kevin turned the corner, and I did as well, just a few feet behind him. A man in all black was walking down the street towards us. Something felt off about him, but I couldn’t say what exactly. As we got closer, the man pulled something from his pocket and aimed at us, more specifically at Kevin. My first instinct was the just get Kevin out of the way. So the logical thing I did? Tackled him to the ground from behind. A string of curses came from Kevin even though I had just saved his life. If I was just even a second slower a bullet would’ve gone through his head. As Kevin rubbed his sore face, I ran straight for the man. Now, even though I was a guardian angel, I could still die again. So when another bullet tore through my side, my adrenaline started pumping. Before the man could hit me with a second bullet, I managed to reach him and punch him in the gut. He dropped his gun as he doubled over, so I grabbed it and aimed it at him. When the man somewhat recovered and saw his own weapon pointed towards him, he ran. I looked behind me at Kevin, but he wasn’t there. He must’ve ran away too, and my sense slowed down. He must be alright now.
I put the gun in my waistband and put a hand on my side. I wasn’t expecting to be shot, but it was rather foolish to charge a man with a gun. I decided to go to a hospital nearby to make sure the wound wouldn’t get infected. While I was walking back down tree street I followed Kevin down, I saw a figure in a black robe. Ignoring the pain in my side, I ran after it thinking I knew who it was. As I got closer, I was right. Standing in front of me was Death himself.
I threw my arms around him in a tight hug. He was taken aback, but he must’ve remembered me and eventually hugged back. After a minute or so, he pulled away mumbling “you’re getting my robe bloody...”
I stuttered out an apology and put my hand over the bullet wound again. I looked up at where Death’s face should be but saw nothing still. However, I felt a wave of concern come off of him while he looked me over. Without any warning, he took my other hand and began leading me somewhere. I was rather confused, so I asked “Where are you taking me?”
Without looking back, he said “I’m taking you to my place. I don’t trust those doctors, plus you’re an angel. They will find something abnormal. So, I’m taking you to look after you until you’re better.”
The gesture was fairly kind coming from Death. Plus he did have a point, the doctors could’ve figured me out with enough testing. As I mentally scolded myself for the second time that day, Death squeezed my hand a bit tighter and kept leading the way to his place.
