Simple tip: Where is the light source? If it's behind the subject, a rim light would do good. Typically light sources are in front of the subject and slightly up, so you have to know where the shadows go. Lighting is where light would hit.

Good assumption, but I haven't played Undertale, nor Deltarune, only watched. In Undertale, probably my favorite characters are Toriel, Asriel, and Undyne. I probably like Toriel more. I don't have a dislike since the characters are all lovable.
