QOTD 1- A thought Experiment

I heard of this experiment conducted by Robert Nozick in which he came up with a thought experiment known as the "Pleasure Machine".

The experiment was that you were given a chance to hook yourself up with a pleasure machine that brought you endless amount of pleasure. Life would just all be about ups and no downs. The catch is, you would have to permanently leave reality but when you are hook up to the machine, you would hardly know that it isn't reality.

Would you hook yourself up to the machine to experience endless pleasure and no pain? If no, why?

as someone who wants to make positive impacts on others, it’s strange for me to noT say yes to that butttttt

endless pleasure doesn’t sound like an ideal life, for me at least. sometimes you need to go down, to go higher than you were before. i feel like everyone just looks at bad events, as juSt bad events. but because of that event, someone can grow into a stronger/wiser person.

Without downs how would we exactly know what the ups were? All the pleasure filled things will seem normal and would lose its pleasure. You would get too used to feeling the pleasure in the beginning but then you’d grow accustom to it, and it won’t have as much as an effect

What I mean by pleasure is basically happiness and doing things that would make you happy xD
