Just the word is sensitive to people because of what the group did, and it used as a joke is... well, offending I’d assume.
The group did a lot of awful things, I wouldn’t even sympathize myself

Of course not as severe as muted, as it was never considered a swear word. However, what that group did in the past does not contribute into making your “joke” funny. It might be a game, but remember that people can feel uncomfortable because of terms used in a game.
