Dark ducked like a normal person, while I dropped to the floor like a puppet with its strings cut. The axe swung through the air where our necks had been a moment ago. I scooted backwards and scrambled to my feet quickly as the guy prepared to chop me in half, and with a horribly loud sound the axe went through a floorboard, reducing it to splinters.
The creepy villager grunted as he picked it up again. "Let me kill you!" he roared, about to attack again.
Before he could, though, Cool was behind him, sword drawn, and he stabbed the guy in the back.
Good, that's over now, I thought. Now, we could just leave before the other guys in the map room decided to do anything.
Naturally, they had to do something at that very moment.
The robed guy raised his hands in the air with a strange cry and a light grey smoke streamed from them, then seven weird little creatures flew out of it as it faded. They were humanoid, about half as tall as a person, and flew around with long, narrow, rag-like white wings. The creatures had milky white eyes, bluish-grey skin, and the same bushy eyebrows as their summoner. Each carried a miniature iron sword. These must have been the vexes Robe Guy had mentioned.
At the same time, the other jacketed guy scowled at me standing in front of the doorway, and picked up the axe that was on the table. Fantastic.
I stepped the the side just in time to avoid being cut in half and drew my sword. For a moment, Axe Guy and I were in a battle, axe versus sword, and then the vexes flew out of the room. Three of them went through the open doorway, and the other three straight through the wall above my head. One of them looked at me, and its face lit up - literally. It began glowing red, as did all of the others.
Now it was a battle of two against one. Yes, one of my enemies was practically an oversized bug, and the other was using an axe, but I was small, weak, and inexperienced with a sword.
Inside the map room, Robe Guy raised his hands again. This time, the smoke that appeared was mauve, and three rows of giant mouths appeared out of the floor, lined with huge jagged teeth.
I ducked the axe guy's next swing and stepped back to avoid the fangs snapping closed, just a moment late. I yelled as the side of my leg erupted in pain, but there was no time to look at it; the fang hadn't actually closed on it, so feeling tears run down my cheeks I stepped back to avoid being decapitated and fell to the floor as the pain shot up my leg again.
I looked up, and only then noticed that more strange villagers had come out of another other room, two with axes and one already raising his hands to summon fangs or more vexes.
The guy attacking me raised his axe over his head, opening himself to attack. Squeezing my eyes shut, I swung the sword, but didn't feel it connect. I looked up to see Cheesy standing above me. She held out her hand, and helped me up. Most of the others were locked in fights with the crazy axe wielding guys, while the vexes served as distractions, getting in the way of actually killing them. The robed guys continued to summon more and more of them, while protecting themselves with circles of fangs that snapped at anybody who came close.
I wished I could summon fangs to protect myself. Instead, my only defense was running into the map room.
Coward, I thought. Quit being a coward.
Fine. I would go back out there and die. But first, I wanted to look at that map.
The bottom third or so of it was dark green, creeping up the left side too. Near the centre of that green was a white spot labelled Mansion in minute letters. The dark green was the forest, then. Above that, there was a roughly oval-shaped area with several ponds. Near the top of the map, there was a red spot labelled Stronghold under village in the same tiny handwriting. It was situated in an otherwise empty pale green plain.
If we survived this, the others would probably want to see the map. I rolled it up and pushed it as far into my bag as it would go. I could pretend that was the reason I'd come in here in the first place, maybe.
A pair of vexes flew through the wall into the map room then, glowing red, and I ducked under them to get out, swatting one out of the air with my sword as I did. It hurt to move the leg; it hurt even not to move.
I noticed that one of the robed guys was lying on the floor with an arrow through his neck. Good way to get around the fangs, I thought, looking for Stre. She was trying to aim for the other, but the vexes kept stopping her, forcing her to kill them before she could shoot. Dark was fighting one axe guy near the top of the steps and Thomas was fighting the other in the middle of the hallway, while Cheesy, Ang, and Cool were helping keep the vexes away from everyone.
I wasn't sure where I should be, and was about to go help Dark when the guy he was fighting fell, to reveal somebody else standing behind. A girl I didn't know stood at the top of the steps. She had long white-blonde hair and different coloured eyes - one bright blue, the other grey - and wore light grey leggings and top, with a long, darker grey sweater over them.
Dark looked up at her. "Um, hi?" he said.
The girl looked around in shock. "What the Nether!" she cried.
There was a soft thud from the other end of the hall. I didn't see what had happened, through all the vexes suddenly flying about angrily, but that was enough of a clue; the other summoner had been killed. The remaining vexes, at least ten of them, swarmed around Stre, Ang, Thomas, and Cool, like rainflies around a lamp.
Dark and the newcomer immediately went to help, which left Cheesy fighting the axe wielding guy. I hesitated, not sure where to go. But then Cheesy stabbed the strange villager, and I could no longer use indecisiveness as an excuse from fighting.
The vexes were fairly easy to kill, with no other attackers to get in the way, but we still wound up with several cuts.
At one point, I was sure I saw the blonde girl slip something into her pocket, but at my questioning look she just said, "What?" as if nothing had happened, and then one of the vexes nearly took out my eye and I couldn't focus on whatever she had or hadn't picked up.
Once the vexes were dealt with we walked down the steps. By the time we reached the first floor we were speed walking.
At least I'm not the only person eager to get away from this place and never see it again, I thought as I mounted Quicksilver, feeling tears of pain prickle my eyes as my leg rubbed against her side, and began riding.
