When the sky began to lighten, we began travelling through the swampland. A lot of the time, we were wading through murky, muddy water, about as high as our waists, and I had to remove my cloak so it wouldn't be dirtied. Ang, Stre, and I were leading the horses, instead of making them force their way through the water with people on their backs. We were careful to avoid the witch's hut, which was in roughly the middle of the swamp according to the map - off to the left of our path - but we encountered several giant blobs of living green slime. Ice seemed reluctant to fight each time.
Sometime around mid morning, Dark suddenly asked, "Hey, who are they?"
We all stopped to look where he was pointing. Off to our left, two girls were also traveling north, although it seemed they were traveling in a diagonal line, coming from about the centre of the swamp. One of them had somewhat dark skin and long, straight, dark brown hair. She was wearing a long-sleeved magenta shirt, turquoise shorts, and white sneakers. The other girl was wearing jeans and a royal blue hoodie, with the hood made to look like a dragon's head.
"Hi!" Dark called.
Ice frowned at him as the two girls looked across at us, paused, then came.
"Ice, there you are!" said the girl in the dragon hoodie with a smile.
"Hey, who are you guys?" asked the girl in magenta.
We all quickly introduced ourselves, then the girls said their names were Kendra (in magenta) and Blue (in, well, blue). I've explained that they lived in the village on the plain, where she did. As we all began walking again, Ice told them about how we'd met in the mansion and then about the stronghold, portal, and Entity 303.
"And there have been a lot of monsters attacking us here, nearly died a lot of times..." she was saying as we walked. "I swear, we'll never reach the village alive. Hopefully there aren't any more to attack us."
I think that jinxed it, for not too minutes later at least five giant slimes appeared out of nowhere and threw themselves at us.
Lone slimes had been hard enough to fight; they just reformed over wounds and they could get your arms stuck in them, so you couldn't even fight. This was probably going to be impossible.
"Just run!" Cool yelled.
Well, I wasn't going to argue with that, and neither was anybody else. We all sprinted through the swamp, dodging around trees and splashing through shallow water. We probably alerted all the rest of the slimes in this place to our presence, but that wasn't important. We just needed to get out. The slimes didn't seem fast enough to chase us, and whenever I looked back there were only about two or three. Still: no stopping.
When we reached the edge of the swamp, the slimes stopped chasing us. Ahead was a flat plain of tall grass and sparse oak and birch trees. The village, a cluster of wooden buildings, lay roughly in the center. To the east was a lake which I hadn't seen on the map, maybe because it was too far.
Strangely, it seemed that there were no monsters at all on the plain - no life of any kind, in fact. The slimes acted as if there was some kind of invisible boundary.
But there would have to be people in the village, at least.
As we walked across the plain, no skeleton arrows came flying from the trees, no spiders crawled out of cave entrances, and no Endermen teleported to us. It was a relief, but it was also kind of eerie.
When we reached the village, I noticed something pretty... unsettling.
It seemed abandoned.
No villagers were wandering around or trying to barter with each other or farming. No little children chased each other or hid behind building giggling. Several doors hung open to reveal empty houses.
"Where is everyone?" Strel asked with a frown, turning to face Kendra, Blue, and Ice. They'd been walking at the back of the group.
Kendra shrugged. "It was abandoned when we came here," she said. "But there crops were still crops growing and it's as good a place as any to live, right?"
Something seemed very off about this place.
"How would we get into the stronghold?" Ang asked.
"I think it's supposed to be underneath the well," Thomas said. "That's what I've read, anyway."
"Then how do we get into it without drowning?" Cool pointed out.
"I'll make some potions of water breathing," Cheesy said. "Then some of us will have to go down and figure out how to get in, and the rest will follow."
Everybody agreed to that.
I stared at the well in the middle of the village nervously, reminding myself that I had agreed to come on this quest, that if something wasn't done then probably everybody would die. But I suddenly felt sick at the idea of actually going into the stronghold.
I had to do this, though.
I couldn't be a coward now.

Here's the chapter that you've waited oh-so-long for (just a week, actually, which was the original plan for how often I'd update the story)! Now, here it is, and... yeah, it's not all that special.
Ooh, here we go, into the stronghold to kill Entity 303 and save the world and stuff! Yay! We're all gonna die!
Nah, I don't think I'm killing anybody off.
Anyway, constructive criticism is welcome, but, y'know, proper concrit.
