Online/Offline Glitch?

Hello fellow players! I have been pondering this for a while: Why can't I join my friend? It says they're online, but it says they're offline. I can't figure out how to join them. May I ask for help for this situation?
 
They might be VIP players using /friend notify.

They can turn it off and on using the command: it won’t allow anyone to join them or show up online in whoever’s friend list, although if they type in chat then you’ll know he/she is online.
