Mongi sat cross-legged next to Benjy on the park bench they'd visit frequently when they were kids. Mongi's head sat on Benjy's shoulder, Benjy's arm slung around Mongi's shoulder. Mongi closed his eyes and sighed.
"I really, honestly don't understand why our parents are so against us. Like, come on, what's wrong with being gay? I knew we should've done this without standing next to each other, with all four of our parents standing in the same room. Seriously, did you think this through?" Mongi shook his head, he was too tired to even try being angry at this point. His parents pretty much threw him out as soon as they heard the words, "gay lovers".
Benjy let out a weak laugh. "To be honest? I have no idea what I was thinking. But then again, a ton of people are against gay people, so I'm not sure why I thought my parents would be any different. They usually just follow what most people say." Mongi punched him in the shoulder.
"OW!! WHAT THE HECK BRO?! THAT HURT YOU KNOW," Benjy yelled, letting go of Mongi so he could rub his now sore left shoulder. Mongi rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, shaking his head.
"Are you serious? You decided to come out to parents who you knew were against gays even though you could have easily changed their opinions by hacking into their google account and changing their search history? Really? Wow. Just... Wow. How does your brain even work?" Mongi stared up at the beautiful sunset, wondering if he and Benjy's relationship could ever be that amazing.
Benjy shrugged, which caused him even more pain. "Ow, owowow. Okay, you punched me really, REALLY hard. You better be ready to pay me back a limb," Benjy stated. Mongi looked at him, not believing a single word he was saying. "Also, my brain works because the fine art of Benjyometry causes it to work." Benjy grinned. Mongi facepalmed, at the same time covering his face so Benjy couldn't see him silently laugh.
"Okay, firstly, I'm never paying you back a limb. Secondly, right. Benjyometry. I completely forgot, sorry. It's just I have too much on my mind," Mongi said, stifling a laugh. He leaned back on Benjy's shoulder, taking in the beautiful scenery.
"I really wish I had a camera right now. This is a once in a lifetime view and I can't be able to catch it on tape, a real pity," Mongi whispered. The scenery was breathtaking - the sunset cast beautiful colours across the sky, the trees shaded the flowers and creatures below from the summer heat, the gravel pathway weaved its way around the place toward a small pond. Really just wonderful.
"And I really wish you'd stop laying your head on my shoulder, it hurts okay?" Benjy mumbled. Mongi laughed, lifting his head. "Thanks."
"I don't get it though. Why are people so against gays? Are we really that bad?" Mongi asked quietly, tears building up behind his eye lids. "It's not like it's illegal, and it isn't hurting anyone. We're just loving someone who's the same gender as ourselves. Is it really that wrong?" Mongi choked on his own voice, tears spilling down his cheeks.
Benjy turned toward Mongi, his hands pulling him into a hug. He tried to keep the tears at bay, but Benjy ended up making Mongi's hair a wet mess anyway.
"Why? Why, why, why?" Benjy could hear Mongi's muffled voice, could feel Mongi's tears staining his shirt. But all he could think of saying was "I'm sorry." Suddenly, Benjy remembered something he'd long forgotten - the day he figured it all out.
That day, Mongi had worn a blue-black checkered Adidas shirt along with white jeans. His hair was a nest-like mess above his head, and he was wearing pink slip ons. Yes, they were pink. A strange colour guys don't usually prefer, but Mongi was wearing it.
The first time Benjy saw him was at the local mall. Mongi was with a girl they both had been friends with ever since they could remember - Cheesy. She was wearing a yellow sweater and dark grey jeans, her long, dark brown hair tied up in a ponytail which swished as she walked. Their hands were entwined with one another, and they were laughing just a bit too loud. People who passed them would look at them like, "What the heck?"
For some reason, Benjy felt jealous of Cheesy. Usually when he saw Mongi with others, he wouldn't think anything of it, but not this time. He was walking toward them so he could tear their hands apart, but then he stopped. Benjy realised what he'd wanted to do.
"What... Why would I want to do that? Cheesy's a good friend, plus she and Mongi are close. She and him would make a nice pair," Benjy mumbled to himself as he walked to where he'd originally wanted to go - the food court.
As Benjy finished paying for his McDonalds, he picked up his tray and turned around, only to see Mongi and Cheesy again, beautiful, bright smiles on their faces. Again, Benjy felt jealous for some reason. He shook off the feeling and went to find a seat. As soon as he did, he started chomping on his burger.
Halfway through his burger, Benjy felt someone tap on his shoulder. He turned around, his mouth still full. Behind him were Mongi and Cheesy. Apparently the table which Benjy was sitting at was a double table, meaning there were three empty chairs. Mongi and Cheesy were looking for seats when Cheesy spotted Benjy. She told Mongi and now they were standing right behind Benjy, asking if they could sit in two of the three empty seats.
Benjy swallowed his burger and nodded, also offering the fries to them. "I'm not really in the mood for fries right now; go ahead and eat all of them." Benjy shrugged, continuing to kill his burger. Cheesy smiled, but Mongi shook his head at Benjy.
Mongi leaned towards Benjy and whispered in his ear, "Stop. Don't do anything like what you just did. Cheesy's mine, got it? I trust ya, thanks." Benjy nodded, finishing the last of his burger. He could feel Mongi lightly kick him, telling him to leave him and Cheesy alone. Benjy picked up his tray and excused himself.
As soon as he dumped his tray, Benjy rushed straight to the bathroom. He stood in front of the mirrors by the sinks. He looked at himself and asked, "Why? Why do I care? Mongi can date whoever he wants." He shook his head. "I'm crazy, that's what. I should just leave, maybe I'll be better tomorrow."
Benjy washed his hands then left the bathroom, but as soon as he exited, he spotted Cheesy and Mongi by a secluded part of the food court - one not many could see - kissing. Cheesy had her hand on Mongi's chest, while Mongi held Cheesy by the waist and seemed to pull her closer. Benjy wasn't sure, but either way, he felt like he would puke.
Benjy ducked through the food court before Mongi and Cheesy could see him, his hand over his mouth the whole time, tears building in his eyes. As soon as he was out the food court he wipped away his tears and took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. He rushed to the parking lot, where his car was.
Benjy got out keys and got into his car, but he didn't start it. He only sat in the driver's seat, crying for who knows how long. He didn't bother wiping away his tears, he just sat there, silently crying his heart out.
"Why? Why, why why? Why do I feel like this?" Benjy cried quietly. He finally wiped away his tears using his jacket sleeve and turned on the car. He'd already payed the parking fee, so he drove out, not caring where he was going, just that he was getting away from Mongi and Cheesy.
In the end, Benjy ended up at his own house. He parked his car and walked up to the front door, but before he shoved the door open so he could go upstairs and bury himself his bedsheets for the rest of the day, he heard the sound of his TV. "The ♥♥♥♥?" Benjy muttered. He peeked through one of the front windows and saw a boy lounging on his couch, switching carelessly through the channels.
Benjy pushed the door open and shouted, "OI! STOP WASTING MY ELECTRICITY! DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE ELECTRICITY BILLS ALREADY?!"
The guy turned around, quickly shutting off the TV. Apparently it wasn't a guy - it was just Lauren, who grinned sheepishly. "Sorry, it's just... My parents aren't allowing me to use the TV, they think I waste too much electricity. But I promise I'll pay you back soon."
Benjy glared at her and rolled his eyes. Lauren followed him up the stairs, as they reached Benjy's bedroom she asked, "Oh by the way, what's with the messy hair? Also, can I stay the night? Parents threw me out." Lauren shrugged. Benjy stared at her again, before shooing her away to the guest room.
"I had a rough day okay. I'll explain later," Benjy mumbled. Lauren nodded.
"Okay. Then can I go watch more TV—"
"NO!!" Benjy yelled. Lauren clasp her hands against her ears.
"God save me from this yelling electricity reject."
