What happened?

You are happily walking through the lands, passing by lilypads and vines. Drowned stare at you from the murky water. Suddenly, a witch spawns in front of you. You are confused, since mobs are supposed to spawn far away from you, and to add to that, it is daytime, the exact wrong time for a hostile mob to spawn. You scream in confusion as you die to a whole bunch of poison and harming poison. The witch cackles evilly.

What happened?

NOTE: No mods were included in this, it is completely vanilla Minecraft.

I suppose the character was in a swamp? A swamp contains murky, green-ish water, vines on most of the trees, and lots of lilypads around. Drowneds can spawn anywhere that has a large body of water, such as rivers, lakes, oceans, ponds, etc. Witches spawn in swamps if they have their hut nearby, no matter the time of day. Therefore, the character would probably be wandering through a swamp near the murky lakes, and a witch hut in the distance.
