I actually like maps with islands close to mid. They dont encourage annoying camping, however encourage making traps still. They also are nice for more aggressive and skilled players.

I making SW map as well. I think, that if you want islands at the good distance, but not too far, just add islands at the middle of the spawn island and center one.
(Sorry for my English btw.)

you can get wood by mining iron(wood planks & sticks), so I don't think it's a huge deal.

A lot of SW maps don't have wood actually, so I think I'm fine. Plus the game already gives a lot of blocks.
