So maybe start with finding someone that you want to be friends with and just start a convo with them and ask them questions. Hopefully they will ask questions back and you won't believe how easy it is to get talking that way. BOOM FRIENDSHIP! (Sounds silly but it is pretty effective)

And yes, I agree that roleplaying is not the only way to make friends, it's your personality, be funny e.g. A joker (not Thee Joker), be yourself, but no swearing or calling others names.
It worked for me, not just my skin or my name, but getting to know others like the one who is IN 1ST PLACE OF THE BP SERVER!! I'm her friend and (plus the bonus) her rival.. O-O
