Later that evening Zoey and her four remaining friends huddled around the fireplace in silence, thinking about Smoosh and Pi. Kayla suddenly broke the silence. "Who on earth would murder our friends?!" she said angrily, glaring at the fire.
"No clue," Jely replied grimly. "But I hope he or she is caught soon."
The others murmured in agreement. They were all determined to avenge their friends.
It was mistier the next day. Vix woke up to find the windows fogged up and the air chillier than usual. Her fingers and toes were numb, and her teeth chattered as she sat up. Things weren't so bright as usual. Nash came stumbling into her room, wearing four padded jackets.
"We're almost out of firewood," he told her. "I'm taking Ally and Summer to collect some more. Wanna come?"
Vix nodded and snatched her backpack on her bedside table before heading out. Ally and Summer were waiting for them outside.
"Come on." Ally urged them. "I want more firewood so I can roast some marshmallows."
They trudged to the edge of the campsite, where a lumberer lived. He chopped firewood every day and supplied it to the tourists. The lumberer was there to meet them.
"Ran out of firewood?" he asked them.
Summer nodded and took a stack of chopped wood.
"Everyone, take a stack and bring it back to the cabin," she ordered before disappearing into the woods.
The others did as they were told. Vix and Ally disappeared with their wood, leaving Nash and the lumberer behind. Nash quietly gathered his wood and turned around to follow the others when he heard a grunt. He turned around to find the lumberer with an axe in his thigh. Nash ran over to the lumberer and brought out his first aid kit. Taking care, he removed the axe and bandaged the lumberer's leg before carrying him back to the campsite. He told the manager about the lumberer and an ambulance was summoned immediately. The lumberer was driven off to the hospital.
Nash ran back down to the lumberer's place and gathered his wood again. Something struck a log in his hands; another axe. Panicking, Nash dropped his wood and ran back to the campsite. It was too late. An axe buried itself in his head, and Nash collapsed onto the ground.
Sirens wailed again that day as Nash's body was loaded onto the back of the ambulance. Kathy looked back at the murder scene. Maybe there were some clues back there. She ran back to where Nash died and found a bloody axe. Picking it up by the handle, she examined it. She was too absorbed in her work to notice someone behind her. Kathy dropped the axe as she was lifted up into the air and carried deeper into the woods. She struggled and tried to break free from her kidnapper, but their grasp was too tight. Kathy saw where they were heading and panicked. There was a huge ravine right in front of them.
The murderer smiled at her.
"Your job as a pretend detective ends now." the murderer sneered and threw Kathy into the ravine.
The murderer looked down; Kathy's body was sprawled on a huge boulder, her arms and legs twisted at weird angles. The murderer laughed before disappearing from the scene.
