I've had that happen recently in a mineshaft.
They can even spawn in the middle of the ocean.

For any player confused with this strange ordeal!! Traveling Villagers are new mobs that spawn in any area you spend the most time in/build there. If you spend more than at least 5 min. in a specific area they will spawn anywhere within about a 25 block radius of you. And, they stay there for about 3-5 days before leaving. And, yes majority off them are rip-offs so I suggest killing them and stealing their llamas. XD.

I’ve seen a wandering trader in my friend’s house one time when we were playing in another friend’s world xD

I probably saw one in the middle of the ocean too lol, I often go exploring in the sea in Minecraft


But as everyone else said, it’s not that rare cuz really, they’ll just spawn wherever they want to show up in your face to ask you to trade for stuff you don’t even need very much in survival xD
