The best way is to try to apologize to him. I personally think that next time you should not take insults, it seems to me that you should be mistaken at any moment. Also, "I am a jerk." because perhaps what you see as a jerk does not make sense to someone else, even to me. It's best to sound like you're trying to say that you're a jerk, than everyone, and that's never the truth. That doesn't say that you are a jerk, just in my opinion.
