They are not milking the forums with ads. They are probably using the ads to pay for the forums! Making websites/forums costs money. I probably don't see much ads because I have ad-blocker because some other sites have disgusting innapropriate ads

I was also wondering why didn't he just sell the sever to someone else. It's not unheard of for a business to run out of money

He probably doesn't want someone to make the server into something sound Bad after all the years he took to make the server sound good and fun!

Late reply but yeah, Most of us are chilling.
I have not seen the advertisements on forums yet due to my browser extensions and dns filters although they are likely there to keep the lights on for forums and expenses from hosting that sort of infrastructure.
Hosting a game server on the other hand is significantly more expensive (Depends on scale as local hardware can scale somewhat well but for a server like BL, I have no idea how that was sustained for so long esp since cloud hosting was likely a must-have in that situation.) and far less sustainable especially when considering monetization methods and how most people with myself included have never spent a dime on a Minecraft server.
