Accusations

It was early morning, Ian, Carrie, and her best friend Andrea were sat at a corner table in the local coffee shop. After filling in Andrea on who Ian was and what he was speculating it took no persuading for him to join them. Andrea loved mystery novels and was excited to be in one of his own.
"Okay, go through the names again just so they stay fresh in our brains" said Carrie, as she took a sip of her sparkling water.
"Ok, so there's Sylvia who was the class bully but mostly picked on Star, her ex a guy called Richard was abusive, but he had something on her which stopped her from reporting him, oh and our Dad, they hated each others guts" Ian finally stopped for breath and perhaps a small bit of chocolate fudge cake too.
"Wow, so where do we start?" Asked Andrea stirring his straw around thoughtfully.
"What about checking her house? I still have the key she gave me" said Carrie as she wiped bisuit crumbs off her lap. "She often made excuses so I wouldn't come round, so maybe she was hiding something"
"Hm, yes that's a good place to start I think. In the victims own home" Andrea grinned enthusiastically, he was really getting into this detective business.
"That's it then. Stars house, let's go now before I get too excited" said Ian as he jumped out of his chair.
As they were walking along the path to Stars house they bumped into Carries next door neighbour, Adam. Adam had a tendancy to be really nosey and wouldn't let you leave until you told him what you were doing, because apparently he just knows when you're doing something interesting.
"Hello Carrie White I know you're up to no good so you should just tell me right now what you're doing" said Adam, pushing his glasses up his nose.
"And if I don't?" Replied Carrie with an irritated look on her face.
"Then I won't leave you alone ever again" said Adam looking very smug.
Carrie quickly looked around to make sure no one was looking then grabbed Adam and pulled him behind the abandoned minimart which closed due to everyone driving into the city to do their shopping rather then there.
Carrie whispered angrily at Adam "if you tell anyone what I'm about to tell you I will kill you and burn your remains, are we clear?"
For a fleeting moment Adam actually looked scared, but quickly collected himself and gruffly said "okay chill woman I wasn't going to tell anyone anyway."
At that moment Ian whispered in Carries ear "who is this guy?"
"Oh I forgot you're not local. Ian this is Adam my annoying next door neighbour, Adam this is Ian a less annoying person."
"Gee, thanks" replied Ian looking a little hurt.
"Hey it was a joke, okay? I'm sorry"
"It's ok" Ian smiled to show that it didn't faze him.
Meanwhile, Andrea was receiving a bunch of strange text messages from an unknown number. He had tucked himself into a corner as to not let attention arouse. A lot of them said similar things to "Stop now" or "Don't continue" he thought about telling the others but decided it would just make them worry, so he kept it to himself for now.
Andrea re-joined the group and Carrie started to tell Adam what they thought.
"Adam we think Stars death was deliberate, as in someone put a hit on her so we're going to find out if that's true"
"Let me help" Adam replied with a determined look on his face.
"What? No, absolutely not this is not a game Adam."
"But I'm good at this kind of thing I'm always doing the puzzles in the Sunday newspaper"
"That's different, Adam." Carrie said impatiently. "Besides you barely knew Star why would want to help us?"
Adam looked uncomfortable for a moment "we may have, uh, gone to the same highschool for a while and we may have, um, dated for a bit"
Carrie felt awkward Adam Campbell opening up to anyone was a surprise and a half.
"Wow so you really want to help huh?
"Kind of" Adam replied bluntly.
"Let's go then"
Carrie smiled and gestured for him to go first, he looked surprised for a second but then smiled back and started walking.
