Chapter 1
Gone
3/08/18 5:48 PMGone
It was halfway through the day and Carrie was stood on the patio, memories washing over her like the flu. She remembered her laugh, so full and alive, she remembered her good morning texts - never missed a day. Those things are gone now. Forever.
The death of Star came as quite a shock, as in no one expected it. Star was the picture of health her energy radiated through a room with her bouncy, charismatic attitude she could brighten anyone's day. And, who would want to hurt her? Everyone liked Star, she was a talking point in the small town of WillowsCreak. Sometimes that's a bad thing, sometimes Carrie felt pushed to the side and forgotten but she knew that wasn't Stars fault, Star just wanted to spread love in a town with past rivalries. That's why it was a shock. Who would want to hurt Star May? Maybe that old man who lives on the very edge of town, what's his name? Mr Johnson? He's shady that guy no one really likes him and tend to stay away from that part of town. Carrie doesn't blame them, the forest behind his house was rather ominous.
So lost in thought, Carrie nearly didn't hear the knocking on the door, her doorbell had broke months ago. Carrie got up from the deckchair she was sat on and trudged through the house to the front door, she unlocked all three padlocks then pulled the chain across and flung the door open to find a tall sheepish looking man on the other side.
He had hair the colour of the darkest night and eyes bluer then the Atlantic. Other then that he looked like a ladder with feet.
"Hi, are you Carrie White?" He asked with quite a confident tone in his voice, like he obviously knew he was right.
"You're in the right place" Carrie replied with an amused look on her face. "What you needing?"
"Uh, can we talk? It's pretty urgent"
She stepped out of the way to let him in then gestured to a place he could put his coat. Once he had put it away she went into the kitchen to search for something to drink. Eventually she located a bottle of lemonade and poured it into two glasses then proceeded into the living room.
She put the glasses down on the coffee table and looked up to find the man staring at the picture of Star Carrie had put on the mantlepiece. He was stroking it affectionately. Carrie tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
"Hm? Oh, sorry I didn't notice you'd come in. I'm Ian by the way, sorry for not mentioning that earlier."
"It's fine, I probably wouldn't have announced my name straight away either but since you already knew it.."
"Oh, right I need to tell you why I'm here. Some guy in town was talking about a death and a "Carrie", I asked him about it and he gave me your address. I knew Star a long time, she was family" He looked down awkwardly but was clearly holding back tears.
"You're her brother?" Carrie asked, surprised. "Star never mentioned a brother."
"No? I'm not surprised, I left when she was sixteen" He smiled weekly "it was for the best, anyway I know a lot about her that you don't, like who her enemies are."
Carrie started laughing. Enemies? Star doesn't have enemies she has admirers lots of them.
"You're joking, no one hates Star" Carrie wiped away a laughing tear and chuckled.
"That's where you're wrong."
