Jc remembered the sweet scent of Lia's hair.
The way her eyes sparkled like diamonds.
The numbing sensation when she held him.
The cute laughter that came from her soft lips when he told a dumb joke.
The way he supposedly broke her heart.
That day, Jc had stepped into the kitchen to get his breakfast, like any other day. Except this time, he'd been surprised by a girl rummaging through his fridge. She had long, silky brown hair, and she wore a lime green jacket, with grey sweatpants. Jc recognized her immediately.
"Um, Lia?" Jc curiously peeked into the fridge from above her head. He saw that Lia had taken almost all the eggs. "What the frick are you going to do with all those eggs?"
Lia expertly but cautiously ducked below Jc's arm to escape to the stove. She grabbed a pan and started cracking the eggs. Jc took hold of her arm and shook her slightly.
"Lia? You're creeping me out. What are you doing here? How did you get in? Why are you -" Jc paused. Lia had turned up to look at him, tears threatening to fall from her eyes. Jc quickly grabbed a tissue and wiped her tears away. "Lia? Are you okay? What's wrong?" He had so many questions... but he was only answered with yet another:
"Do you love me?" Lia's eyes teared up again, which made Jc nervous.
"Of course I do... you know that, don't you?" Jc bit his lip - what had he done wrong? Lia shoved a crumpled piece of paper in his direction. She was crying now. Jc took the paper and unfolded it. As soon as he saw the picture, he froze.
"If you really do, then explain that." Lia shook slightly, tears pouring from her eyes like water from a river to a waterfall. Jc simple stood, motionless, staring at the picture.
The picture depicted Jc kissing another girl - she had dark brown hair which reached just under her waist, and her arms were wrapped around Jc's neck. Shielo. They seemed to be at a party, but away from where everyone's attention was at.
Well, not everyone's.
"I... Lia, I wasn't... This isn't me -" Jc was cut short by Lia's yell, her voice cutting through the air, booming like an explosion. "HOW CAN IT NOT BE YOU?!"
"I don't know... Maybe someone's framing me?" Jc was bitting his lip so hard, it had started to bleed. Lia stared at him, speechless, tears still falling from her eyes to her tender cheeks, to the cold, hard floor.
"Frame... You're horrible with excuses. Just admit, you were out drinking with another girl, and I was here, sitting on my dumb ♥♥♥, thinking I could trust you." Lia looked away in disgust. Jc reached for her hand, but she pulled away.
"I swear I wasn't drinking with her. I'm not even that person. I swear to God, I haven't kissed anyone in the past 48 hours except you." Jc's vision turned blurry, and he wiped away his tears.
Lia looked back at him, her eyes red, her cheeks wet. "You always made up excuses when you did something wrong. Or, you just blamed someone else. It's really a wonder that you've never been caught until now." She turned around and focused on the eggs again.
"I know you love eggs, so I decided to cook you one last breakfast before I let you go," Lia said. Then, she was like a robot, just cooking eggs, refusing to talk to anyone. Jc sat at the dining table, trying to figure out what to do. When Lia served him the plate of eggs, he knew her smile was karma at work.
"I guess I'll see you at school later. Hey, maybe I can spread the news - Jc Garcia is a cheater." Lia smiled at him, but he could see behind her disguise. He knew tears were bulding up behind her eyes. One last time, he tried.
"Lia, please -" Jc started, but Lia just shook her head.
"It's okay, really. I understand if you got tired of me, I am a rather boring person after all..." Lia smiled, then headed for the door.
"Lia! Please, just -" But all he heard was a door slam shut. Then he knew.
She was gone, forever.
Now, Jc was just a loner. Apparently, Lia had meant it when she said she was going to spread the news. Everyone at their school found out - which wrecked Jc's reputation. One moment he ruled the school, the next he was a nobody. Those fangirls he used to have? Now they shied away from him, worried he'd do the same to them.
There were just two people who stuck by him, and whose existence he truly appreciated. Strike and Shielo. There was another girl, but she switched schools, and they almost never talked now.
As Jc walked towards his locker, someone threw their arm around his shoulder. He swatted the arm away, only to find that it belong to a girl he used to hang out with - the girl I was just talking about.
"Lauren? I thought -" Jc was cut off by Lauren's snicker. She took her hand off him, and dragged it along with her.
"You always think wrong. Especially when it comes to fighting." Lauren smiled at him, while he just glared at her. He tried to punch her, but she sidestepped his hand, which almost made him fall.
"What did I say? Horrible at fighting," Lauren grinned. She rummaged through her jeans pocket, and took out a neatly folded paper, just as they reached Jc's locker. As he got some stuff out and put some stuff in, Jc spied Lauren from the corner of his eye - he could see her staring at something, or possibly, someone. Then he realised the paper.
"Whatcha got there? A love letter to Ray?" Jc teased. He expected a reaction - like a friendly punch or kick - but received none. "Hey, it was just a joke, you know." Lauren shrugged the topic off like it was nothing. She handed the paper - apparently a picture - to Jc.
"You know that photo that someone took which wrecked your relationship with Lia and also your reputation? Well, it was photoshopped. The photo I just gave you is the real thing." Lauren looked at him, waiting for him to look at the photo, for his reaction.
Jc gulped, then looked at the picture. There was Shielo, with her dark brown hair, and her hands wrapped around...
"Strike?" Jc looked up at Lauren again, confused. "I don't get it. You're sure this is the original?"
Lauren nodded. "Really Jc, are you seriously going to doubt the person who took that photo?" Jc looked at her. Then at the photo. Then back at Lauren.
"But who..." Jc tilted his head. Lauren just smiled sadly at him. Then it hit him, like a stone in the head.
"Ray. That b -"
"No, you idiot." Lauren facepalmed, then shook her head. "Tantastic. Remember Lia's old boyfriend? Yeah, that guy. I had shown that picture of Strike and Shielo to a couple people, Tan included. He is probably the person who stole Lia from you. And unfortunately, due to both your and Lia's stupidity, he has won this little game."
Lauren handed Jc another photo - this one of Lia and Tan sitting on a bench. Jc could see Tan's hand wandering places he'd never been to before, making him green with envy.
Suddenly, the bell rang, signifying the end of school for Jc. "Shoot," Lauren muttered. "Gotta run, I'll cya around sometime, ay?" Then she was gone, disappeared into thin air. Jc looked at the photo in his hand. The original. Not the fake Tan showed to Lia. Using this, he could win Lia back.
Well, maybe. It could fail, but let's not think about that.
Jc dumped all his books into his locker. Then, he grabbed the photo and ran out like a damn mad man. He looked for Lia everywhere - in the park by the bench they used to eat ice cream and joke around on, the tree they would sit under and talk, the back yard of the school, where the football field was. But she was nowhere to be seen.
There was a small "Ding!" sound. Jc's iPhone. He took it out and quickly typed in his password, then dialed Lia's number, ignoring the worried message from his mom. "Please, please, please answer," Jc mumbled.
"... Hello?" Lia's voice sounded nervous, and afraid. "I don't have much time, please be quick." She didn't recognize Jc's number either, which meant she'd deleted him from her contacts.
"Hey? I'm waiting." That brought Jc back to earth.
"Um, hi Lia. I'd just like to -" Jc stopped. He heard Lia scream. "Lia? LIA!" Jc panicked. A muffled voice answered him.
"If you want her back, come down to the docks, where all the abandoned warehouses are. Then just wait there." Then Jc heard a "Click!" and the call was ended.
He was already running to the docks. The docks - the place which was once a beautiful view, where Jc would take Lia fishing sometimes. In the past month, some sort of crime happened there, and suddenly nobody dared go there. It was strange - what type of crime scared everyone away from a certain place?
As he reached the docks, Jc was breathing hard, his breath shaky. He looked around, for some sign of life, of Lia, but he saw nothing. He turned to the warehouse where the crimes had happened. Maybe they'd be in there.
Jc approached the warehouse, cautious of any suspicious people lurking around. He crouched down low beneath a broken window, just enough so he could still see inside. He grabbed a nearby stick as a weapon, just in case, then focused on what was going on inside.
There was a girl - Lia, Jc figured. Without lights, it was hard to tell - who was strapped to a chair with rough-looking string. Her hands and legs were tied, too, and her mouth taped as well.
A man came into view. He had light brown hair, and emerald green eyes. He crouched down so he could look up at the girl. From this distance, Jc couldn't really hear what he said, but he could make out a few words.
"If he doesn't show up... doesn't love you... played... love me..." Jc realised what he was saying - if he didn't show up, that meant that he didn't love Lia (the girl), and that he had just played with her. Tan would treat her better, love her truly, and be a better boyfriend, if Lia was willing to love him.
