Furries are a fandom that has been around since the 1980's where people who take an interest into Anthropomorphic animal characters can really get involved with their characters and bring them to life as art or a fursuit. Not all furries have a fursuit in fact only 12% of furries in the entire world have fursuits. There are two sides to the furry fandom, the "Safe For Work" side and the "Not Safe For Work" side. The Not Safe For Work side is mainly about the sexual side but i'm not gonna go too detailed into that area of the fandom.
The main area I will be talking about is the Safe For Work side doing it for the fun and to spread the magic off furries to the public as well as the joys of fursuiting. We do this because it is a fun enjoyable hobby, not many people understand it but we like to also teach them more about the fandom and what it's like being a part of it. Below is a picture of my fursuit which was made by someone down in Southampton called Cwoodsdean Creations for a price tag of £1225 These suits are not cheap because of the time blood sweat and tears that a fursuit maker puts into making 1 fursuit.

There are many species in the furry fandom and you can literally become anything from a fox to a complete whole new creation of a hybrid. I am a Dutch Angel Dragon this species was made by Ino89777 and has now became a really popular species for people to make their own fursonas from. If you want to know more about Dutch Angel Dragons we have a website at http://www.dutchangeldragons.com Don't worry! it's not a spam or phishing link. Fursonas are what we like to call our characters as it is similar to persona and it sounds more furry related.. Because who doesn't like a good pun.
So how does one become a furry? well you don't even need to do any of this if you like Anthropomorphic animals then Congratulations your a furry! But if you want to get more involved then it's best to think about what your character will be and how it will look. This is a template of a thing called a reference sheet or "Ref sheet" these are how we can make our characters come to life by colouring in one of these or getting someone else to do it for you at the price of like $20+ depending on how skilled the artist is. Below is a free base that can be used for a wolf fursona all you would have to do is colour it in.

Once you have made a ref sheet you can start to collect art and build up your fursona because artists can use your ref sheet to see every angle of your character. Fursuit makers also use this to make your fursuit if you ever have enough money to buy one.
C O N V E N T I O N' S & M E E T S
Furries normally attend conventions that are hosted from all across the world from Hawaii all the way to Japan. Conventions are world wide and are a great way for other furries to meet up and hang out with others that are into the fandom. The largest of these meets is Anthrocon which takes place in Pittsburgh Pennyslyvania every year organised by a man called Uncle Kage. The second biggest would be MidwestFurFest in Chicago. we go to these meets to interact with others who have the same hobby and also to join in on fursuit games which can be various fun activities for fursuiters to run around in their suit playing at a convention with others or to spread the magic of fursuiting and furries across the world since these are not private conventions anyone can attend them!
This year I attended a convention called ConFuzzled which is the largest convention in the UK. it was an amazing convention and gave me a great opportunity to meet other furries across the country and even some from out of the UK.
