Sunshine- A Short Love Story Written By Eric And Lauren

Sunlight filters in from window, weaving its way through the fabric of the curtain and casting its muted glow onto me. Groaning, I shift, so my back faces the light, but it’s no use. I’m awake.

Sitting up, my legs involuntarily kick my duvet to the side as I stretch my arms out. Lazily, I swing my legs off the bed and stand up, shuffling across the room to my desk, where I pick my phone up and check the time. As the screen blinks to life, it informs me that it’s 08:25 and I have a few messages from Jared. Ignoring the messages for now, I unlock the phone and put some music on as I walk over to the bathroom.

As I brush my teeth, I look at myself in the mirror. My hair’s a mess, but I could care less about it; it’s always a mess, anyway. I spit out the excess toothpaste and wash the brush, wiping the corner of my mouth with the back of my hand as I do.

Pulling the curtain open, bright light pours into my room. Ever since the Marsh's moved out last October, the house next to mine has stayed empty, but it seems like that’s going to change today. A moving truck is parked in the front, and there’s a woman in a plain purple dress speaking to a man in uniform. Next, to her, a boy, looking around 13 or 14, is reaching into the truck, seemingly searching for something. A box, maybe.

Then there’s the girl. She’s wearing a black shirt decorated with a floral pattern, coupled with jeans and green flip-flops. Her long, coppery brown hair cascades down her back like a waterfall, the edges grazing the tip of her waist. For a moment, I just stare at her, but when she looks up at me, catching my eye, I shy away and pull the curtains shut, not bothering to catch her reaction.

Sighing, I flop onto my bed, listening to the music as Beat It finishes, slowly fading out as Pocketful of Sunshine starts. For a while I stay there, just listening to the songs. After a few minutes, I hear the low rumble of the moving truck as it drives away, and I force myself up. Still, I don’t dare even glance through the curtains. Instead, I turn the music off and slip my phone into my pocket, before pulling the door open and walking downstairs.

“Good morning, Ma,” I call out. My ma is in the kitchen, an apron on top of her white shirt. She turns to me and smiles, before returning to making pancakes. On the dining table, there’s a newspaper, so I pick it up. There’s nothing interesting on it, so I mindlessly flip through until I get to the comic strips, reading a few before putting the newspaper down.

My ma puts a plate in front of me, the pancakes drowned in maple syrup and butter. I smile at her, before digging in. It's delicious.

After I'm done, I go back to my room. The moving van that was outside a few minutes ago was no longer there, leaving the ties marks on the front of their house. I flopped down to my bed, connected my phone to my beats speakers, blasted the music on full volume and let it play as I stared at the blank ceiling above me. The music that was currently playing "Love Somebody" reminded me that tomorrow was going to be a terrifying day with everyone bring gifts for their loved ones at school.

It pains me to see that everyone at my bus stops would bring a gift to school except me. After giving myself a few seconds to myself, the music ended with the smooth voice of a woman saying, "Love Somebody" at the very end of the music. The next music played with a rapper singing some random thing that made no sense which is the main thing about rapping, making no sense.

I left the music play in my room while I get a card game downstairs in the dining room where my family keeps the games for family Friday.

11 P.m.

I currently lost time while sinking myself into the music playing around me. I was about to call it a day and head for bed until I heard something coming out of my window, sounding like someone stepping on my lawn that was filled with the leaves that have been there since fall. I quickly lower the volume of my rap music from my phone and rushed towards my bedroom window as I took a peek outside.

I was expecting a squirrel or a gray stray cat going through our lawn since there are a lot of stray cats in our neighborhood but to my surprise, it was the girl that moved in next door to us in the morning. I looked up to see one out of their four windows with the lights on. I took a closer look to see her brother doing some kind of research with his Beats headphones around his neck.

Anyway, getting back to her. She seemed to be looking for something in the pile of the leaves in her lawn. In this case, I would've gone down there and helped her in finding on what she's looking for but like with every situation or opportunity I get, I let it pass for some reason. But not this time.

She still had that black t-shirt on her but this time, she had a flower crown on her head following by some new dark paints on her. I quickly swapped my phone from the wooden desk next to my bed, slashed open the door with all my might I had inside of me, rushed downstairs, making that bumping sound every time you took a step on the staircase.

I was about to head towards her lawn when I heard the sound of nails clanging on the front wall of the doorway. I slowly turned around in a 90 degree, already knowing who would be behind me. "And where do you think you're going Mr?"
