Hilary Clinton

Pros

    • Experience: Unlike, say, Mitt Romney, whose foreign policy knowledge you could drown in a bathtub, HRC has extensive foreign policy experience.
    • Dynastic advantage: While I realize some people have a problem with a Bill-then-Hillary political dynasty assuming its place in history, I actually believe this gives her a uniquely informed view of Presidential life and the compromises involved.
    • Gender: I believe it is long overdue for a woman to become President of this country. We can debate whether HRC is the *right* woman for this signal honor, but if she is elected President, I believe it would strengthen our country, which needs a woman's viewpoint as a counterweight to hundreds of years of male hegemony.
Cons

    • Too hawkish: I'm realistic enough to know that any candidate who could survive to win the Presidency in this country will be more conservative on most matters than I am. But I am particularly troubled by her relatively hawkish view of the ongoing Middle East crisis.
    • Bill baggage: Regardless of what Hillary does, she will still bear the baggage carried by her husband over the various flaps that occurred during his presidency. Any ex-President is going to have enemies, but Bill seems to have more than most.
    • Not a change agent: I don't have a lot of evidence here, as I haven't studied HRC's career as closely as I would like, but I don't see her promoting sweeping change to help the poor and disadvantaged, nor do I see her engaged in a pitch to fight the powers that be on Wall Street or in corporate boardroom
Donald Trump

Pros

    • Donald Trump's background has been pretty well examined, and what you see is pretty much what you get, so he isn't an unknown commodity at this point and we probably have seen most of his worst attributes already -- granted, those negative attributes can seem bad, but notice that in any presidential election you could probably make a laundry list of the worst attributes of any candidate and come up with lots of negatives equal to or worse than Trump's.
    • Trump's business experience involves negotiations with business leaders and even governments around the world, and he likely has connections behind the scenes that surpass those of simply purely political candidates -- this gives him keen, realistic insights into economics in different parts of the world, as well as additional avenues to pursue trade agreements, and even perhaps some nuanced awareness of particular financial weaknesses of possible global competitors, not to mention experience and insight into the partnerships and/or antagonism between different industries and particular governments.
    • Trump has a confidence and powerful personality that, like it or not, tend to work well in politics, and make it far less likely he would become too strongly beholden to this or that external influencer -- we complain often about our elected officials being in the pocket of lobbyists and special interests, but Trump is his own special interest and he seems unlikely to let his own sense of personal power and rightness become manipulated or dominated by outside forces.
    • Trump is undeniably a great negotiator, and despite his bombastic public statements he has also mastered the fine art of navigating complex deals and convincing a wide variety of governments, industries, businesses, and investors to do what he wants and to work with him to achieve his goals -- while some might dislike this or that particular goal toward which Trump worked in those instances, as president a large portion of his negotiating would by necessity be in favor of very standard U.S. positions on international issues, and Trump would be applying his skills to push a lot of policies that came through/earned support from a Congress that represents the voters and that has created compromise deals and policies, rather than Trump just out there still negotiating his personal business deals that the public and our representatives weren't involved in.
CONS:

  • Lobbying: A billionaire businessman with questionable business dealings and morals as POTUS is a corporate lobbyist's wet dream. As such, lobbying has wreaked havoc with a beautiful and bountiful country. With Republicans controlling Congress anyway, it is likely that lobbying would see an uptick. So much so that the food industry has managed to get pizza classified as a "vegetable" so that it can be served in schools. Next up, they'll lobby for a McDonalds burger to be classified as a fruit and get it done. Scrapping the EPA, drilling for oil in national parks and reduction in food stamps is likely.

    • Overt Racism: Trump is openly racist and a part of the populace likes that. It isn't America alone, but world over, every country has its fair share of racists and xenophobes. Trump himself doesn't have to make such policies to threaten minorities and non-white ethnicities. The very fact that he is President would embolden closet racists to come out and create havoc in public. Racists within the police force could use violence to take out their wrath, knowing that the country's leader is likely to back them and make statements. Leniency is expected while dealing with racial crimes, not because of laws, but because of his posture. Ku Klux Klan registrations may open up, mosques and temples may be vandalized and black areas may get more severely ghettoized further. They're likely to start protecting themselves with guns and rocket launchers. Regular skirmishes between the police and these groups may erupt. Black power and pride movements may start with full force. An almost segregation like situation may gradually develop.

    • Alienation: Large sections of American society including African-Americans, all other hyphenated Americans, gay people and legal immigrants from around the world would feel threatened. A lot of them could potentially seek opportunities outside the US and start a reverse brain drain. One of the great things about America is the ability of the country to attract talent (despite its immigration laws). This would wither for the 4 years of Trump presidency. And die if there is another four, God forbid.
