Maybe because you have high ping , I’m not sure but did you try putting the tnt near the mob?

It's probably because you got hurt while using tnt in the mob, that's why the server thought that.

Technically you slightly assisted yourself into death

if you damage yourself in any way through something that was physically caused by you (not including fall damage or fire damage; this applies for throwing eggs/snowballs at yourself, shooting yourself with an arrow, or damaging yourself from tnt explosions), then you get an assist if you die. It’s like when it says “[your name] killed by [your name]” if you end up dying from your own tnt, so it’s the same for if you got a little hurt by your own tnt.

plus, a tiny bit of free extra exp and coins is a bit nice when that happens

Your own tnt can actually do a lottt of damage to yourself and when you eventually die in the game, you assisted in your death and get coins and exp like assisting someone else’s death. It’s one good part of being a tnt main in games so take it lmao
