As demonstrated in the clip below, if you've got two sets of armour like leather and iron boots; by wearing leather on your character and swapping out the iron from your hotbar, And then dropping the leather boots bugs into iron boots somehow.
Note: IF you eat before resetting the previous armour piece on your character; they'll turn back to it's original form. The order which you need to reproduce this bug is sorta confusing.
In short you need to be wearing the armour piece you want to duplicate, hold the desired piece in your hand, swap (right click or hold) and drop the item.
