Introduction

“A long time ago, the world had no rulers. Communities were split into villages, and everyone did as they pleased. No one ever thought they required anything more. However, the world was falling to destruction. With no one to govern the people, more crimes were committed; the populace able to get away with just about anything. The weak were left to starve on the dusty streets, while the strong and wealthy bullied them to submission. The whole world was tumbling into upheaval; humanity begun losing hope that things would ever get better.

Then, one fateful day, everything changed when a mysterious young woman came into a small village far north. She was different, everyone could tell. The slender woman possessed fiery-red hair that cascaded down her shoulders along with delicate facial features. She walked with a grace that seemed almost surreal. She was truly the most beautiful woman that the villagers had ever laid their eyes on.

The members of the small community had never seen her before, and for that matter, no one had. The village had stated that the woman carried four dragon eggs with her. The shiny shells glinting in the rays of sunlight as she moved about. She had roamed slowly across the streets lined with worn buildings, until kindly asking the head of the village if she could stay for a while when she finally located him. He allowed her to rent a small room in the local inn for the duration of two weeks.

She never came out of that room. People claimed they could smell smoke as they passed by her door.

During the middle of the second week, the woman finally emerged out of her accommodation. With her she brought four baby dragons. Everyone in the village was stunned to silence, until realization finally dawned in their eyes. After that, the villagers followed her, for they feared her no longer.

The world knew a prophecy from an old legend that stated, “When the full moon is at its largest, a women with four dragons will be born. This woman will be the savior, the mother. She was chosen by the gods.”

The villagers offered her everything they owned. Society begun addressing her as “Queen Mother”. In addition, the world from then on was known as “Abyss”.

Many years later, the four dragons were healthy and fully grown. They towered over the people. The reptiles were even more massive than the largest ship in Abyss.

The queen began building up new villages that surpassed the ones that came previously. She created five kingdoms in total. However, she knew she would be unable to take care of all of them. She decided that she would need to trust four of the kingdoms to people who would be able to rule over them for her.

The south of Abyss became known as Loria. Queen Mother handed that kingdom over to Lord Hamsburg. She trusted him and his family with all her heart; the queen knew she had made the right choice. The west kingdom was called Alexia, which the queen had named after her claimed mother. She gave the kingdom to Lord and Lady Arien, who she entrusted with the responsibility. To the east of Abyss was Rethville, which was given to Lord Orental and his family. Lastly, to the the north of Abyss was the biggest of the four kingdoms. This kingdom was called Snowbist; it was given to Lord Elven, who was another trustworthy being in the queen’s life.

The last kingdom was Queen Mother’s. It was there that she acquired her real name, “Queen Weris”. Her kingdom was identified as “Irine”. It was the largest and most bustling kingdom of all of Abyss, located between the south and west kingdom, beside the sea. People came from across the oceans just so they could behold the wondrous realm. The main cities were always teeming with foreigners who had traveled far distances just so they could see the the territory for themselves. Everyone was happy; Queen Weris was continuously fair to her people.

Years later, however, disaster struck. Much of the public in the kingdoms had begun to fear Queen Weris’s dragons; they planned to kill them and take her down. Groups of civilians formed a rebellion against the beloved queen. The leader called himself “The King of Abyss”. He longed to assassinate the queen, with a secret desire to become the king of all the nations.

Queen Weris had one dragon in the north, named Zokir. One in the east, with the name Dywon. One in the west, called Pyrduss. And finally, one that flew in between both south and her capital, taking turns visiting the two kingdoms. This dragon was the most trustworthy of all the dragons. His name was Xorianos.

The rebels attacked the dragons with arrows they shot up at the sky when the majestic creatures were least on their guard. Some claim that Xorianos may have survived the ambush and flown away to safety, considering that he was the mightiest.

When the queen heard of the deaths, she was heartbroken. She was weak with sorrow; feeling powerless without her dragons who had given her so much stability. Despite this, her loyal kingdom never ceased fighting for her.

The great Battle of Irine was filled with much bloodshed and casualties. The north, south, and east came with over 900,000 boats and 2 million soldiers. Help also arrived from the west, and in addition, Irine had its own fighters.

The fight lasted many months, Queen Weris was practically confident that they would defeat the rebels. But then, the rebels revealed their secret weapon, one that could change the course of the whole war. They had a giant in their control. This colossus rampaged across the villages, destroying everything he passed. The monstrous beast devoured people whole, while stomping on others. The devastating creature managed to slaughter all the royal knights, without even breaking so much as a sweat.

It was at this moment that Queen Weris knew the war was lost. She sat on her golden throne, waiting. The queen ordered all of the royal guards to withdraw from the gilded throne room. She was on her own. Queen Weris waited and waited, until finally she heard guards and knights battling right outside. They were attempting to breach the heavy wooden double doors to the throne room.

A special royal knight, chosen by the queen herself, one who had sworn to protect her with his life, dashed into the room. He had abandoned his orders to sprint up to the queen, grabbing her hand, and running her out a back entryway. Queen Weris attempted to refuse him at first, but she soon saw the reasoning behind his words. If she perished, the world would go back to the way it had been before. However, if she somehow survived, she could one day return and restore peace to the land. The queen finally accepted the knight’s words, and they exited the castle together. Disappearing up the mountains, they were never to be seen again.

The royal guards who remained at the castle were said to be taken hostage and then killed after being tortured for the queen’s whereabouts. No one had any answers. Only one thing was certain, Queen Weris was still alive somewhere, in hiding, accompanied by her knight and last dragon. Some also believed that she would return one day to reclaim her lost throne. Everyone prayed for her accomplishment in this task.

The kingdom was conquered by Urio, who called himself “The Great King”. He became the new ruler of all the kingdoms of Abyss. The west was treated poorly for fighting for Weris. King Urio seized the kingdom from House Arien and gave it to someone more loyal to him. The same went for the other kingdoms in turn. Abyss became even worse than it had been before, with more people starving to death each day. Civilians were murdered by the new royal guards for remaining loyal to their queen or praying for Weris.

There were many rumors of a special prophecy and Queen Weris’s diary, which could possibly lead to her hiding place. Somewhere hidden away in the basements under the maester’s headquarters, guarded by the royal maesters and the last royal knights who were still loyal to Weris.

However, no one knew for sure if this information was valid, or if it was only a lie brewed up to provide a sense of hope for the powerless people of the five kingdoms.”

Andrea finally set down the book she was reading when she heard her mother, Esabell Flintsoar, calling her name.

She had become so interested in the history of her world over the past few months, ever since she discovered the dusty old History of Abyss book lying around in her mother’s room.

When she found it, Andrea had thought the volume would be full of dull information. Regardless, she soon saw that the text was brimming with numerous intriguing facts. This same knowledge had been running through her mind for some months now.

I wonder if this information is true, Andrea thought to herself. Could Queen Weris really be alive?

She was snapped out of her thoughts when she remembered that her mother was waiting for her. She would need to get back to reading at a later point.

“Coming Mother,” Andrea shouted as she bounded out of her room to see what her mother needed her for.
