Well hi everyone reading this thread. It's pretty cool that you're able to be here right?
Everyone that is reading this thread, right now IS affected by what might happen to our precious internet.
You may already know this, but recently an FCC (Federal Communications Commission) chairman announced a plan to draw back a lot of net neutrality laws which will change the way we access the internet.
If this sounds bad. It is because IT IS!
If this does not sound bad to you. Let me explain. Net neutrality is basically a way to say how the internet is open and accessible to anyone. You're able to go wherever you want on the internet, you're able to do what you want on the internet, you're able to have some sense of privacy/anonymity on the internet without someone (e.g a company) tracking your every move.
And of course, this system isn't PERFECT but you're able to do all of this BECAUSE of the net neutrality laws.
So if these changes were to happen, and the net neutrality laws are change, here is an example of what could happen. Imagine you go on to YouTube one day and instead of finding the YouTube home and the videos you want to watch, you find a page. That simply says "We're sorry. You have not payed for the 'Entertainment Package' of your internet plan. Please pay $10"
Basically what the FCC wants to do is make the internet a more profitable place. That is really bad, but it is one of the first steps they want to take.
You may not think it is THAT bad but it is. If you're okay with this/ allow this then what you're doing is "put[ting] in the framework for information to be controlled, and when you do that you [allow people to] control what you see and when you do that you control what people think"
And don't be stupid. This is not going to lead to a world where everyone is mind-controlled and people can't think for themselves. What it is really going to do is ruin people's opportunities to be able to do what they want to do on the internet.
The internet is an amazing thing where people are connected globally and allows a spread of information for wherever the heck it wants to go.
If this happens, you lock down on opportunities for people to "thrive both for themselves and for our future generations".
"I am not even saying that you shouldn't have to pay for the internet, I mean you still have to pay for water but there's no just barely clean enough water and then the premium water for $10 more dollars that is actually not going to kill you"
"When you set up a system that allows corners to be cut and allows businesses to prioritize profit over people, that's when society starts to degrade and innovation to be stifled BECAUSE IT'S NOT PROFITABLE"
The bottom line is that the internet should be available and accessible to everyone. There definitely should not be paywalls that limit what you can see based on how much dang money you have. You should not be limited, in general, to what information and the things you can see on the internet. There shouldn't be people controlling what you see and what you know, people watching your every single move on the internet.
We can not allow this to happen! And thankfully there are ways to try prevent this and to fight back. I will provide tons of links that will explain this all way better than I did and I will also provide links to more information and finally...there will be links to see ways you can fight back. You (or your parents) can contact the people who are involved in these decisions. Please don't be lazy and think this will all be fixed thanks to other people. Everyone can help. Spread awareness like I am doing now, retweet stuff, repost stuff etc.
Even if the government wants to ignore us, even if they are just doing this for money and profit. You can still make a difference! These systems are only in place because we let it, we decided it. The internet only exists because we built it, made it, improved it.
"So we have to take charge and remember that this is so important [and] that we need to protect it...The internet is a beautiful thing, because of how open and accessible it is and I want to keep it that way and I want you guys to be able to enjoy whatever you want to enjoy. I want you guys to be able to do what you want to do on the internet without someone telling you, you cant'."
Tell your parents about this and try get them to help out.
That is all I am going to say. Check out the links in the description and please try to help out as best you can! <3
