A NEW LIGHT: CHAPTER 1 ~ PART 2 ~
The two players landed in a small puddle of water. Talia wiped the water out of her eyes and gaped in awe. Rabbiton was an amazing place. The inhabitants would be missing the upper part of the world, so they decorated the walls with coloured wool to mimic the world above.
Carrots, beetroot, sugar cane and potatoes grew alongside a little stream. Actual rabbits
roamed around the place, munching on the crunchy crops. Houses made out of wood populated the city, with thousands of players inhabiting each one.
“Welcome to Rabbiton!” Liza said cheerfully, interrupting Talia's thoughts.
“A safe haven for everyone!”
“What now?” Talia asked her.
“Well,” said Liza. “We’ll have to bring you to the Hall of Judging so the Chief Elder to decide your fate.”
Talia gulped, hoping that Liza wouldn't notice. They walked side by side to the Hall of Judging. Players abandoned their work out of curiosity as they came to see the new-comer. Liza turned a corner and into a big wooden building.
“Is this the Hall of Judgement?” asked Talia, who had to jog to catch up with Liza.
“Nah. Of course, it isn’t. I’m just dropping by to say ‘hi’ to my family.”
Liza opened the door and stepped inside. Talia's eyes widened. There were a lot of rabbits. Brown ones, short ones, fat ones, etc.
“Who are they?” Talia asked as she followed Liza.
“Oh. They're my siblings.”
“What?!”
“Yep!”
Liza grinned at Talia's astonished face. She whistled. This got every rabbits' attention.
“LIZA!!!” the rabbits cheered and ran to hug her. Liza grinned and hugged them.
“Good to see you guys!”
A mud-brown hare with big hazel-black eyes stepped forward.
“Who are you?” he asked Talia.
“My name is Talia,” she replied. “I’m just passing by your city.”
“Oh, you need to go to the Hall of Judgement.” the hare said automatically.
“Oh, this is Kenneth, Talia,” said Liza.
“I’ll accompany you to the Hall of Judgement,” Kenneth replied eagerly.
He had an impish grin on his face.
“Ok. Bye guys!” Liza shouted.
“Bye Liza!!!” they all chorused back.
The trio stepped outside and Liza closed the door behind her.
“Uh, what will happen in the Hall of Judges?” Talia asked.
“Hall of Judgement.” Kenneth corrected her. “They will decide if you’re trustworthy or not.”
“And how will they do that?”
“The elder can see the greatness of your heart,” Liza said.
They walked in dead silence and turned more heads. Talia still stared in wonder at the amazing underground city around her. Pretty soon they reached a large quartz building with a purple banner that stated: ‘Hall of Judgement’.
“Here we are.”
Liza pointed to the building. Talia looked cautiously at it.
“What are we waiting for? Let us go!” Kenneth chirped.
They climbed steps and went into the grand building. Rows and rows of spruce wood tables and chairs were placed in a formal matter. In the back of the building was another table.
“Hello?” said Liza, her voice echoing in the building.
Suddenly there was a mechanical sound, and a squad of rabbits emerged from a secret door. They slid silently into their seats and waited patiently. Another rabbit, in black robes, sat at the back table. Talia was nervous. These rabbits didn't look friendly. She chewed her fingernails as she waited. Finally, the rabbit in black robes said:
“What brings you here, Liza?”
“I found a traveller, your honour. She was attacked by a spider.” Liza replied, her voice high-pitched with fear.
The black-robed rabbit peered down at them.
“Who are you?” he asked Talia in a sinister tone.
“My name is Talia,” she bowed as she said this. “My village was destroyed by the Wither, and I had respawned in the middle of nowhere.”
“And what is your village called?”
“Firetown, your honour.”
“Firetown?”
The rabbit looked thoughtfully at the other counsellors in the room.
“We haven't heard from them in a while now, haven't we Mavis?” he addressed a rabbit with ashy fur.
“No, we haven’t, Grand Counsellor. They were supposed to submit their nether rack quotas to us yesterday.” Mavis said.
The grand counsellor nodded.
“So you’re a victim, I assume?”
“Yes. I was the one who stopped the hideous beast, your honour.”
“Very well,” he paused. “I hereby announce that Talia will be allowed to stay in Rabbiton for the night, and no more than that.”
The grand counsellor grabbed a small mallet from within his robes and slammed it onto the table. The other counsellors stood up and preceded through the secret door again. Talia, Liza and Kenneth made their way back home.
“That was exciting!” Kenneth said, his eyes sparkling. “When I grow up, I want to be a grand counsellor!”
Liza laughed. Talia grinned.
“I was a military leader of Firetown before it bit the dust, you know,” Talia told him.
His eyes lit up.
"COOL!!!" Kenneth said in awe. "When I grow up, I want to be a grand counsellor and a military leader!"
Talia and Liza chuckled some more, and there was silence. Only the sound of crunching gravel was audible.
“What are you going to do now, Talia?” Liza asked.
Talia thought to herself and said:
“I’m going to find my village, avenge it, and then I might make a new village somewhere else.”
“Sounds cool!” Liza said.
They arrived at Liza and Kenneth's house. Liza opened the door. It was peaceful in the house. So quiet that you can almost hear a mouse. The rabbits were sleeping peacefully in their beds.
“Go to bed Kenneth,” Liza whispered to him.
Kenneth tip-toed his way to the back wall of the bedroom and snuggled up against another rabbit with brown fur. Talia followed Liza up a flight of stairs and down a passage.
“Here’s the guest room,” Liza said, opening a door. “Get some sleep. Tomorrow I’ll accompany you on your journey, and so will Kenneth.”
Talia nodded.
“Thanks, Liza. For everything.”
“No problem.”
Liza shut the door behind her. Talia tucked herself into bed and dreamt of her old village. It seemed to last for like a second before she woke up to see a pair of large black eyes staring down at her. She yelled and rolled off the bed. Kenneth laughed at the look on her face.
“Not funny, Kenneth!” Talia said as she stood up and dusted herself off.
Liza into the room with a tray.
“Don’t do that to Talia, Kenneth!”
“Sorry!” Kenneth said cheekily.
Liza sighed.
“Breakfast is served,” she said as she placed the tray on the floor and sat down.
Talia followed her example and ate her beetroot stew and baked potato. Her meal was history within minutes. Kenneth burped and wiped his mouth on his sleeve as he finished the last remaining crumbs from his meal.
“Kenneth!” Liza scolded him.
“Whoops.” Kenneth grinned another one of those mischievous smiles and leapt up.
“So, we’re leaving today.”
“Yep,” Talia replied, wiping her mouth on her sleeve.
Liza stood up.
“I’ll get us some equipment for the journey.”
She raced out of the room. A second later she was back with a shulker box in her hand. Liza placed it on the floor. Talia opened it eagerly to find a full set of iron armour and an iron sword.
“Neat!” she said as she weighed the sword in her hand.
They all then dressed in their iron armour and went into the living room. Liza whistled and was soon surrounded by her many siblings, all of them hugging her.
“Don’t go, Liza and Kenneth!” they all chorused.
“Sorry siblings,” Kenneth replied. “But we have to.”
“Wah!!!”
The rabbits started to cry.
“Hush, little ones,” Liza said, patting a few on their heads.
A rabbit with black fur and white spots with a little white dress and matching shoes went up to Talia.
“Here’s a gift for good luck.” she handed Talia a golden carrot.
Talia took the carrot and stored it in her inventory.
“Thanks a lot.”
“Okay, bye guys!”
“Bye!”
The three stepped outside the house and Liza closed the door with a click.
Talia turned to Liza.
“Where’s the exit?”
“We’ll show you.”
Kenneth ran up to a tree and pressed a hidden button camouflaged within the leaves. The wall behind him revealed a passage. Talia walked into the passage with her new friends. She came to a stop when she noticed a pitch black hole blocking her path.
“Uh—is this supposed to be there?”
“What?”
Liza then noticed what Talia was pointing at.
“Oh, that’s our way out!”
“Isn’t it a bit dangerous?”
The rabbits laughed.
“Show her Kenneth!” Liza nudged Kenneth towards the pit, still racked with laughter.
Kenneth jumped into the hole. Talia braced herself for the sickening crunch of her friend hitting the floor. But she didn’t hear it. Instead, she heard a mechanical sound and saw Kenneth flying to the surface. Talia peered up at him as the ground that separated them from the surface made another hole. Kenneth launched up the hole just in time, for the hole closed again as he disappeared.
“Pretty cool, huh?” Liza said when she saw Talia's shocked expression.
“Yeah, it is.”
Liza moved to Talia.
“Now it’s your turn!”
Liza gave her a mighty shove and Talia gave way as she lost her balance and fell into the pit, shrieking at the top of her lungs. Talia was terrified. She tried to convince herself that she was going to be alright, but the thought of being crushed by the tunnel was horrifying. She then heard the mechanical sound that she had heard earlier, and a second later slime blocks appeared from beneath her. She felt herself being catapulted to the surface. Talia saw a brief glimpse of Liza's smirk and felt something snag on her shoulder. The hole in the roof opened and the sunlight shone on her face. She heard the tunnel close behind her and fell into a puddle of water.
