Day 1
~~
Zoey sighed, lost in thought, her breath creating a small patch on the window. Right now, she was in a car with all of her friends; they were taking a holiday in a cabin in the middle of the woods. Her friend, Smoosh, managed to book a cabin just before they were sold out, and now they were driving along a road to the middle of nowhere. An iron gate appeared in the mist; it was open. Smoosh, who was driving the car, drove slowly through the gate and it closed with a slam. Zoey looked back. She thought she saw a dark figure lurking in front of the gate. A gust of wind blew, and she swore that she heard a voice say "There's no escape". A chill was sent down her spine, but Zoey shrugged off the thought and sat in the warm car while Smoosh looked for a parking spot.
There were 8 cabins overall, with four to five people sharing one. Vix dumped her belongings on her bed and trudged outside to meet the manager of the holiday, who had requested all of the tourists' presences. A crowd of thirty-four people surrounded a man, who was padded with five coats and two woollen hats.
"Welcome to Moonlake Cabins!" he said, his teeth chattering. "I'm the manager of this place, so if you need help you can ask me right away."
The people murmured their greetings.
"Cool, so I'll just leave you guys to it." the manager clapped his hands. "I-I'll be over there if you need me."
He slowly walked into the mist.
Smoosh was bored. She thought that the cabins would be more exciting, but all she saw was snow and more snow. To entertain herself, she decided to go ice skating. Smoosh placed her ice skates carefully in her backpack and set off at a jog to the frozen lake that she saw earlier. A few people were already on the ice, skating away.
"Hey Smoosh!" Pi greeted her as he skidded to a stop beside her.
"Hey Pi," Smoosh replied, taking off her boots and putting on her skates.
"Hurry up!" Pi said, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her along with him onto the ice.
Smoosh laughed and spent the rest of the day skating with her friend. By the time they decided to head back to their cabin, the sky had turned a soft pink and the sun had almost vanished behind the forest.
"Time to head back." Pi stated and started making his way to the edge of the forest.
Smoosh followed him, unaware of two pairs of eyes, watching their every move. She sat next to Pi and undid her skates. Pi stood up.
"See you at the cabin," he said and turned to head back.
He never made it back. There was a thump. Smoosh turned around and saw Pi on the ground, a skate in the back of his head.
"PI!" Smoosh exclaimed and kneeled next to him, turning him onto his back.
His head lolled onto the floor, a look of surprise etched on his face. He was dead. A sob escaped from Smoosh as she stood back up and took off at a ran back to the campsite. She had to alert the manager about Pi. Something scraped against her face. A skate stuck in a tree next to her, and Smoosh felt blood trickling down the side of her face. Alarmed, she ran faster, her heart thumping. A figure leapt out in front of her; Smoosh screamed and tripped over a log, landing on her back. The figure loomed in front of her, a skate in one hand.
A scream echoed in the night. The other tourists looked up in fright and ran outside to check on the manager. Kathy ran to the lake; the scream came from that direction. She gasped when she saw Smoosh. Smoosh was frozen mid-scream, blood streaming from her cheek and neck. Someone had slit her throat. Kathy ran to get the manager. He arrived promptly and gasped when he saw Smoosh.
"Go and see if there's anyone else down there," he instructed Kathy before lifting up Smoosh's body and carrying her off.
Kathy ran down the path and came across Pi, the skate still in his head. The manager came back to collect Pi, and by the time they made it back to the campsite, an ambulance had arrived to collect the dead. Smoosh and Pi were loaded on, and the ambulance drove away, its sirens wailing. Kathy turned back, a grim look on her face. Something caught her attention; she turned to see a carving on a tree. Kathy's breath caught as she read the carving. "Remember, you will all die soon".
