HAUNTORY 2
Moundsville Penitentiary
During its more than 100 years in operation, the Moundsville Penitentiary in West Virginia was one of America's most violent correctional facilities and the final stop for almost 1,000 criminals. The prisoners lived in cramped quarters, which led to riots. Many men were hanged or killed in the electric chair, while others were murdered by other prisoners. The prison closed in 1995, but according to some, the tortured spirits are still behind bars and in the bowels of the prison and may be seen or heard on a tour.
Everything was okay when the prison was commissioned and opened in 1876. That was until it became seriously overcrowded around the 1930’s and all hell broke loose!
There have been several investigations carried out by groups and individuals that continue to report positive findings from EMP readings among other ghost busting methods.
Eyewitnesses have reported shadows walking into the high walls and strange voices from the cell blocks but much of the ghostly activity takes place only in a few spots within the huge 10 acre prison’s compound.
These include the basement recreation chambers popularly know as the “Sugar Shack” back then, Death-row, the Chapel (probably filled by souls looking for redemption…), the showers, and the hanging area which was near the North Wagon Gate.
Twice Killed…
A botched hanging carried out on one Paul Advil Atkins could also be the reason why his spirit still lingers at the infamous prison building.
The story goes that the first attempt to hang him went so terribly and comically wrong that he instead ended up face first on the ground below the gallows when the trapped door opened before the noose was properly secured around his neck.
He was led back up despite the serious injuries he had suffered from the accident but this time there were no mistakes.
Mysterious Face...
In 2011, Amy and her team went inside the Penitentiary.
They were down in the hole sitting in complete darkness asking questions when all of a sudden a brick comes flying through the air!
A little later, as Amy was sitting in the chair, her leg started burning. She noticed there was a couple light scratches. Then they went to the Sugar Shack. They were walking in total darkness when all of a sudden a light bulb shatters on the floor in front of them. Problem was, there were no light bulbs anywhere down there.
They took pictures in the cafeteria and got 3 orbs in a perfect triangle shape about two inches off the floor. And in the second floor bathroom, they took a picture in the bathroom. When they developed it, there was a very disturbing face in the mirror! And it was taken in total darkness. They were all terrified.
There are several stories like this about the Penitentiary. It could be normal people scaring others...or it could be the inmates who are looking for redemption...nobody knows.
