The Arrow’s Path
“He can only be defeated by his own blood,” the camel said. The words spun in my head, creating a whirlwind of confusion and mass astonishment.
“Wait a second, what?” I asked, shocked.
“Did I not speak English?” She snapped. “How should I know? I’m just a prophecy-giving camel! I don’t know every single thing on this darn earth! Young humans these days! Thinks that old camels can give them answers on whether or not they will get a special partner and not have to live with a thousand cats for the rest of their miserable lives!” Camel Cassandra grumbled.
“Oh, I am so sorry I needed clarification on whether or not I should shoot my own brother,” I retorted sarcastically. But inside, I was terrified, terrified that I was going to fail. Terrified that the “he” was my own ruthless brother.
“See? You understood my words! You’re lucky that the prophecy wasn’t in Camelic! The last time an ungrateful little squirt came here, I didn’t know English yet! So the prophecy was given in Camelic and he was—”
I cut her off, “Ok, ok, I get it, I was lucky, I should be so grateful for this prophecy, blah blah blah.”
“Watch your tone, mister! It’s bad enough that I have to be in this stupid cave, by myself, until some random uneducated baboon—”
I coughed, “A human.”
“Same thing, don’t interrupt me!” She snapped, “As I was saying, until the baboons come along and wreck my peace every few hundred years, then they have to be rude as well!” Camel Cassandra said, annoyed.
“Ok, fine, geez, I’ll leave, thanks, bye,” I sighed, walking towards the entrance of the dark cave.
“You’d better leave!” Camel Cassandra yelled after me, “You were a bad customer, don’t come back!”
I reached the opening and stepped out towards the light. Finally, I won’t have to hear that nagging camel.
“So how’d it go?” A voice asked, appearing in front of me.
“AHHH!” I screamed, jumping up, “Who’s there?”
A girl’s voice started laughing, Esmeralda, “Your reaction was hilarious, Lance! You screamed like a rock that’s about to get stabbed!”
“Em, I told you this a hundred times, stop doing that, also, rocks don’t scream. They can’t get stabbed either,” I told her.
She ignored my plea to stop scaring me, “Get another pair of eyes, and ears too, of course they can,” Em argued, picking up a rock. “Yeah, Lance! Respect my beautiful species that can scream and get stabbed,” She squeaked in a high-pitched voice. I sighed, knowing there was no way I could win this.
“Anyway, what did the Prophecy Llama whatever-it-is said to you?” Em wondered.
“Camel,” I corrected, “But she said, ‘he can only be defeated by his own blood’,” I repeated the prophecy.
“Ooh, that’s gotta hurt, but hey, at least it’s all your problem now!” Em chirped unsympathetically.
“Wow, thanks,” I remarked sarcastically. She was right, though, possibly the entire world– not that they know it– is depending on me. I can’t afford to mess this up.

I stepped out of the lush green forest and found a shrub to hide behind. I looked towards the dried-up plains. Gray tents were set up everywhere, my eyes drifted towards the center of the field. There, talking to his army of undead soldiers, was my brother, Axel, his red and black robe was swishing back and forth as he walked. The fresh smell of the grass was covered by the heavy scent of smoke. I felt the breezy wind hit my back and I looked back, towards where Em is hiding. She gave me a thumbs up, signaling that she’s got my back and for me to go ahead. I put on my mask, not wanting to get recognized by my brother, and stepped into the clearing. Immediately, a skeleton spots me and shouts out something in weird skeleton language, but I kept walking. My brother noticed me, naturally, and he stepped out towards me.
“Who are you?” Axel demanded.
“I’m Batman!” I blurted out in a small voice. Confused noises spread over the plains, I looked back and saw Em, stopping in her tracks to facepalm at me.
“I mean– I– Can I redo that?” I asked my brother. He was staring at me, confused, I took that as a “yes.”
“I’m Batman,” I spoke in a much better Batman impression, “Ahh, that sounds better.” My brother looked stumped. Ha, I knew my amazing impression could win us this war!
"What in the name of rocks are you doing?” Em shouted at me, “Now’s not the time to be doing stupid Batman impressions! You should’ve mimicked Mario and went ‘It’s–a me, Mario’!”
Silence.
“What?” Em protested, “So Lance could do a Batman impression and I can’t do a Mario one? Plus, mine was way better.”
Ok, yeah, whatever.
By now, my brother had recovered from my Batman attack, and he was already inspecting Em and me. Axel seemed to realize something.
“Oh, look, how sweet, it’s baby brother and his friend,” he smirked, amused, “Nice of you to join me as a happy family.”
I scoffed, “It won’t be happy with you in it.”
Axel put his hand over his heart, “How hurtful, baby brother, I was planning to spare you, but–” He shrugs, “Now I’m going to have to kill you.” Axel slowly walked over to me, and my entire body froze, as if paralyzed. Em was trying to reach me, but with no success as my brother’s army blocked her. Axel kept walking, with his sword drawn, grinning evilly, then–
He slipped on a banana peel.
“WHO PUT THIS BANANA PEEL HERE?” Axel screamed, furious. Now’s my chance! I realized, while he was distracted, I could shoot my arrow through him and end this.
My whole body seemed to unfreeze and I quickly got out my bow and arrow. My hands were fumbling with the string of the bow. My pulse was racing and my breathing got shallower, I felt like I was on the top of Mount Everest. I finally steadied myself and nocked an arrow, preparing to shoot. At that moment, a million thoughts were attacking my mind, forcing to take control. My gut wrenches, a terrible feeling overtakes me. What if I fail? I wondered inside my head, what if I wasn’t good enough? What if the prophecy was wrong? The whole world will be depending on me. What if I couldn’t accomplish this task? There are others far more able than me, I’m far too weak, I’ll mess up! My head was spinning, I felt woozy, and my feet were already starting to crumble. My hand stopped. It was still pulling at the arrow, not letting go yet. What are you doing? I chided myself, shoot the arrow!
But I couldn’t. By now, beads of sweat was trickling down my forehead, and my palms were sweaty. Even if humanity wasn’t depending on me right now, he was my own brother, my own blood. I was terrified of shooting that arrow and destroying what’s left of my family. Even though he killed others, I couldn’t spill my own blood.
Could I?
The image of the little girl, with her red curls, lying dead, surrounded by a pool of blood, overwhelms me. I shut my eyes, my heart pounded in my ribcage, doing backflips through my chest.
I released the arrow.
I wasn’t sure where it had hit, but I heard a loud scream, and I slowly opened my eyes, one at a time. My brother was on the ground, clutching his chest. Oh, no, what had I done? I shook that thought away. I did the right thing, I reassured myself, it was the right choice. I tentatively took a step, then another, until I reached my brother’s body.
I poked him with a stick. He was unconscious. I relaxed a bit, heading to go help Em with the undead soldiers.
“PSYCH!” A loud voice interrupts. Shocked, I turned around, there, fully unscathed, was my grinning brother.
This time, I was the shocked one.
“Baby brother, did you really think your horrible aim could hit me?” Axel pointed to the tree behind me. I turned around, my arrow was impaled on the tree.
How did it get there?
“I’m ashamed to be related to you,” he continues, “Maybe I should fill out a court case for you to not be my brother anymore.”
“Mamma mia! HE’S STILL ALIVE? You idiot! Even my pet rock can do better than you!” Em yelled loudly at me, having turned around to see whether I defeated my brother or not.
“Well, why don’t you try to shoot your own brother?” I shot at her, annoyed.
Em rolled her eyes, “I’ve told you this a thousand times, I don’t have a brother, I have a pet rock.”
“UH, I’m still here! It’s rude of you to ignore the leader of the undead when he was talking to you!” Axel piped up.
“Go away! I’m trying to win an argument here!” I hissed at him. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my ribs. I crumpled down, holding my sides. Beside me, Axel was holding his sword.
“That’s what you get for ignoring me,” he snarls. Axel raised his sword, preparing to strike, when a flash of green appeared in front of me and blocked his sword. I breathed a sigh of relief.
“Don’t be so relieved now,” Em motioned around us. I looked up, the undead army was walking towards us. And we couldn’t possibly escape with my inability to walk because of my ribs– unless if Em abandons me, of course.
“Peachy,” Em muttered.
“Hey, play fair,” I objected to my brother.
“What is that? It’s not in my dictionary. Oh, yeah, by the way, my dictionary is in the newest version,” He smiled cruelly. And with that, the undead closed in around us.
