I'm just more comfortable starting with eyes and nose, then drawing the head around them. I suppose it depends on the style though - I have a pretty cartoonish style, but someone who draws realistically probably finds base lines incredibly important

I normally draw a circle, make a head shape, then ears, roughly where facial features go, a line for body positioning, connect, and add details an wa la

Face crosses aren't necessary but they do help most people. Try doing it and see how you're comfortable drawing

I use the full cross when I'm drawing someone looking straight at the "camera" but aside from that, I don't use it at all. I probably should but I'm not very comfortable with it

well.......i use da circles and lines for head shapes, which are something I fail at.
For the body, I draw a “skeleton” and then play connect the dot-er circle.

I'm pretty sure face crosses are to place your eyes/nose/mouth/ etc. evenly and more accurate because for some people, they have hard time making the eyes even xD (pssst my sister is well known for this)
