Maybe your minecraft pe is not official mojang. The BrokenLens Server is running on the latest 1.1.x version is working for me as fine. Therefore, I personally use 1.1.4 with my Xbox Live account to join any servers and it works perfectly fine.

You just downloaded that link, an unofficial version of Minecraft PE is unable to any servers, now you can try to go to the "Minecraft Pe called 1.1.4" website to download it. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this.
