Soon, the trees became much more sparse, until there were almost none to be seen, and the podzol was replaced by grass once again. We passed a small pack of wolves at one point, but they ignored us. We hadn't been seeing very many animals, I noticed. The landscape went from relatively flat to incredibly steep and hilly, with some overhangs in places and even snowcaps on the really high mountains. Going even further, the grass turned to exposed stone and gravel in most places. It was getting very cold, so I was grateful for my thick cloak.
There was a river winding throughout the mountainous area, which seemed to have cut its way through all the stone in order to make its path. After having to cross it twice, we just decided to travel next to it.
We steered clear of the many dark cave openings in the mountains, despite knowing that the sunlight wouldn't actually protect us. More than once, a bigger-than-normal spider or a fire-resistant skeleton or a magma cube attacked us, and we dealt with them fairly easily compared to the ghasts. After those, it seemed like we could defeat anything.
Ha, ha, ha.
It was approaching nighttime, and I wasn't exactly sure what we were going to do when the sun had set. If we weren't safe from monsters during the day, how could it possibly be safe at night? We could keep going, but we would have to rest eventually.
Thomas was taking a break from walking, and was now mounted on Fire Dancer. Ang walked, occasionally reaching to scratch Max's head. The wolf stayed near his master's side as we travelled. Next time we switched, I would be the one walking. I wasn't particularly worried about my legs hurting from that; right now, my shoulder was aching.
"Is it weird that we haven't seen that many monsters today?" I asked. "'Cause, usually it would be weird to see a lot in the day, and I'm glad we didn't, but you'd kinda expect to encounter more."
"Yeah," said Thomas, nodding. "I thought that after the attack on the village. They came in full force to destroy it and then just sort of scattered. Except, I think that some more have been spawning too."
"Are you sure they're spawning here? There's definitely no portal?" Strel asked.
Thomas shook his head. "No portal, I'm sure."
"And what are we doing when it's dark?" I asked. "There are going to be more monsters then."
"I guess... we keep going, until we can figure out a safe place to
rest," Ang said. "Do you guys think we should use a torch, or would that attract too many monsters?"
"It might, but I think it's a better idea to use it," Strel said.
"Better to bring monsters to us than fall into the river because we can't see," I added.
Wow. I thought that it was worth it to make ourselves a target for monsters. Their insanity must have been rubbing off on me. But the alternative just seemed like a humiliating death.
Ang took a torch out of her pack and lit it. As night fell and more monsters came out, it attracted them like moths. We had to fight off more than a few. Our torch was the only source of light in the dark, until-
"What's that?" Ang asked. She'd stopped walking. I looked where she was looking, at one of the nearer cave entrances. Most of the them were gaping holes, black against black in the darkness, but in this one, a light was flickering like fire, getting brighter, closer. Max sniffed the air in that direction curiously.
Person? Or monster? I couldn't see why any monster would need to carry a torch, but at this point, I wouldn't have been surprised.
Ang silently put out our torch, making us effectively invisible in the night.
After a minute, the being holding the torch came out. It did turn out to be a person - two people, actually. They were both boys, with dark hair and somewhat tanned skin. The guy holding the torch wore a blue jacket with black sleeves open over a brighter blue shirt, and black pants. The other guy wore almost all black, but his left shoe was blue and the right one was purple, and the same applied to the patterns on the sleeves of his sweater. Each of them carried a pack, probably containing the stuff they'd just mined (read: diamonds, most likely, because apparently they just offered themselves up to anyone who wasn't me).
Ang shrugged and relit our torch. At the sudden flare of light, the boys looked up, saw us, and probably thought, Why are these random people watching us come from a mining trip?
"Uh... hi," called Ang nervously.
The boys shrugged at each other strode over to us. "Hi," said the guy in blue, grinning.
"Yeah, hi. Um, who are you? What are you doing here?" asked the other, although it didn't actually come across as rude, just to the point. His eyes were different colours, I noticed: the left one was blue and the right one had a purplish tinge.
"We're passing through, going north," Thomas said. "We figure we can try to stop all the weirdness happening with monsters."
The boy in blue glanced down in surprise as Max began sniffing his hand. "Nice dog," he said.
The boy in black ignored that. He raised his eyebrows and said, "You figure four people can end that?" He looked down as Max began sniffing at his feet.
"Well, it was originally three," I said, "not that that's better. But yeah, we're insane."
Apparently deciding that the boys weren't a problem, Max padded back to Fire Dancer's side and sat down
Dark laughed. "Can we make it six people?"
"Would be great," Thomas said, "instead of travelling with just girls."
Stre rolled her eyes and punched him lightly in the shoulder, and with that we resumed traveling, now with our party grown slightly.
"I'm Dark, and this is Cool," the boy in blue told us.
We all said our names (Thomas made sure to add "the Exploder of Flying Jellyfish!" after Stre introduced herself), and Cool asked, "Wait, so how do you know to travel north?"
I was the one to answer. "A couple days ago, my village got attacked by zombies and skeletons, during the day," I told him. "I ran north - I mean, I wasn't thinking of any particular direction, I just happened to go that way - and eventually came to where Ang and Stre were living. They said that their village had been attacked by creepers and destroyed-"
"Normal or charged?" Dark asked. "Charged, right?"
"Not charged," Ang said, "but I wouldn't say they were normal."
Stre continued the story for me. "So, we figured that if the weirdness hadn't reached Hermione's village way down south until then - nearly a week after ours was attacked - then the source of it must be north."
"And then they met me," said Thomas, "even further north. A bit over a week ago, my village was attacked by Nether monsters, so that proves it even more."
"Is that what happened to you?" Dark asked, looking at Ang.
She nodded. "Ghast."
"How far north, do you think?" asked Cool.
"Ah, we're not sure," said Ang. "But we'll figure it out once we reach there. Hopefully."
Cool looked skeptical. I couldn't blame him. I was, however, confused by Dark's eager, excited grin.
"What about you?" I asked them. "Has anything we haven't mentioned so far happened to you?"
Cool shook his head. "We're travelers," he said. "Nomads. I mean, I've seen stuff like that, but I guess the monsters never attacked in large numbers like that since we don't live in a village."
Huh. That hadn't even occurred to me. They were attacking villages en masse, then spreading out. Becoming not just stronger, but also organised... and wiping out places where many people lived.
Oh, Notch.

Gasp! The monsters are really thinking this through, huh? Or... is it actually the monsters planning this? Hm, maybe... or maybe I'm trying to trick you
Either way, you'll have to figure that out on your own, 'cause I'm not saying it until the characters learn it. Hmph. Again, the weird eyes aren't a plot thing, just CoolGuy81's skin. I did, however, remove the Enderman bit. That's because all of these characters are meant to be human, so while there may be some oddity like unnatural eye colour, there will be no animal ears or part-monster faces. And wow, we are meeting a lot of people quickly, aren't we! One day, and that's three new people on the journey already.
Yes, DARKDRAGON532, I told you that you would enter in Chapter 8. Well, stuff got changed around so now you're in Chapter 6, so I guess that's good for you. And FloatingOnAir__06, there you go, you're an animal who appeared for all of one sentence.
I appreciate constructive criticism, as long as it's proper concrit, saying what should be worked on.
If you want to be tagged for an alert when future chapters are posted, fell free to say so.
