You go to the menu in game then go to the cosmetic shop part (should be first one) and you can use the buttons to select what particles (walking or the other one) then same for buying them, use the buttons to pick which particle you like and just buy it with your coins

It's kind of hard to explain, When your son is in a game lobby he can access particles via the BrokenLens Menu which can be located in any minigame lobby. It is right behind the spawn location when you enter the minigame lobby.
