Coal. No, that wasn't what I wanted right now.
Redstone. No, not that either. I did need some more, though.
Iron, nope, gold, nope - I gasped and laughed softly as I finally found what I was looking for: lapis lazuli.
I closed the large chest and made my way across the cluttered room to my workbench.
I really should tidy up, I thought. It was a thought I'd had many times before, but never acted on.
The large chests everywhere made the room into a maze, and nothing inside them was sorted out either - my lapis lazuli had been in the one by my bedroom door, while the small amount of cactus green dye I had had been out by my little kitchen area, and Notch only knew where the other colours were. My house had gotten to the point where you could hardly see the pinkish jungle-wood floor or the andesite walls with veins of subdued colour, hidden as they were by chests.
There was an awful lot of noise outside, lots of yelling and shouting and what sounded like moans and doors being pounded on and something rattling. What were the villagers doing? I tried to check, but I couldn't see a thing - naturally, my windows were blocked by chests too.
I set the dyes on the crafting table and began mixing them together. Hands stained cyan, I turned to reach for the carpets I -
I sighed. I forgot to get the carpets out. I thought they were in the chest by... by the front door? Maybe. Hopefully.
I rummaged through it for a minute. No carpets, and no wool, but my shears were in there. I could at least go shear the sheep outside. It would be good for them; they were probably dying of heat. Looking at the shears, I frowned. They weren't in great condition. I'd have to replace them soon. Well, they would work for now.
Someone suddenly began beating on my door, as if they wanted to break it down. I stood up angrily, turning to face it.
"What, are you trying to-" I broke off with a shriek when I saw the face through the little window in the door.
I had been expecting a long face with a bulbous nose and heavy black unibrow, frowning at me for acting like I ran the village (it was a frequent complaint from some of the older villagers). Instead, the person standing outside was a man with a somewhat round face, his skin mottled green. His eyes were horrible, though, just black pits. Yet in them, I could see his hunger, his malevolence.
Not a person. A zombie.
A zombie trying to get into my house. I needed my sword, and I had no idea which chest it was in.
The zombie moaned and groaned as it continued trying to destroy my door. It even stuck an arm through the space as if it thought it could reach me that way.
Sword, sword, sword. Need my sword. Where was it?
With a horrible sound, one board was ripped free from the door. The zombie seemed more excited now, more frantic, and began beating even harder on the door. Zombies weren't intelligent, as far as I knew, but it could obviously reason that this bigger gap in the big piece of wood in its way meant it was getting closer to its prey. Me.
Notch, help me.
Apparently Notch wasn't feeling particularly sympathetic towards me, because at that moment the door fell inwards with a crash. The zombie came straight towards me.
And stopped.
I nearly laughed. The zombie was trying to walk still, but had walked right into one of the chests between it and me. It slowly turned and tried to come at me again, but walked into another chest. It couldn't navigate the maze I called a house.
There was another path to the door, so I ran that way as the zombie continued to confuse itself by bumping into chests, trying without success to reach me.
I nearly screamed again when I saw the zombies and skeletons roaming through the village. I was generally afraid of monsters - I was more of a tinkerer, someone who liked to craft and build things, than a warrior. I was awful at fighting, and that would have made what I saw bad enough.
But there was something else terribly, horribly wrong about the scene before me.
None of them were burning.
All of the zombies and skeletons should have been burning up in the sunlight. They were extremely sensitive to it, and if any were still out at this time, they'd be taking shelter. But no, these ones were out in broad daylight, and they seemed perfectly fine.
It was unnatural and terrifying.
I realised, belatedly, that this was the cause of all the noise I'd heard. I didn't see any of the villagers, anywhere. I did see several doors broken in, and I could hear noises from inside some houses.
I couldn't fight these. I could hardly fight one monster. There was no hope for me against them. I saw two options: stay and die now, or run and die a little bit later. There wasn't much difference.
A villager wearing a green robe stumbled out of the small wooden house next to mine.
"The zombies," he gasped, in a nasally voice. "The skeletons... how..."
I shook my head. I don't know. I couldn't form the words.
A skeleton turned toward us, and I made my choice. I ran.
"Wait!" the villager called. There was a thud, and he gasped, "Help me!"
I didn't look, couldn't look, at what had happened. I kept running.
Coward, whispered a voice in the back of my mind. You're a coward, Hermione, a coward.
I know,
I thought, tears prickling my eyes. I know.

Okay, that ending was pretty bad XD I don't know how to end a chapter, alright! And yeah, I know I didn't introduce any other characters this chapter, but I will in the next one. I hope you guys like it so far, and if anybody wants an alert when the next chapter is posted (I think I'm gonna try for a weekly thing) you can comment below and I'll tag you at the end of it. And... I think that's all I have to say.
Wait, no.
Con-crit wanted! But proper constructive criticism, not "omg dis suks u should just kys bcuz u can't rite and dat ending was so cringe.' Tell me what could be done better and how.
Also, I hope that villager getting shot is allowed... technically, I didn't describe any blood or gore, so it's okay, right?
Alright, now I'm done.

Also, here's Chapter 2 > https://brokenlens.xyz/forums/threads/our-world-begins-to-fall-chapter-2.24969/

I was listening to One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful while reading this and when I came to the end I was like, "You don't knowww, you don't know you're beautiful, that's what makes you beautiful" lol.

But brilliant story, good job! :D

I love it! :3 The ending was suspenseful! >:3
Also, tag meh pls? (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Good vocab, btw :D

This is such a fantastic story, and I can't wait for you to make a new chapter! Well done! :)
Thanks, Spike. :D
Best story of minecraft I ever read keep up the great work.
You should be a author IRL.

When will I be mentioned?
Thanks ^_^ And I'm not sure exactly when you'll come in; I have most of the story planned out but I'm still deciding each person's introduction and pair (I'm trying to put people in pairs when they enter the story so that part can be done sooner). So, short answer: people will take their time coming in and I've placed you about the middle for now.
