Matty's Misfits
Segment 4
Matty
"Remember," Matty began, performing a stupid dance to fit into her tattered jeans.Segment 4
Matty
"I know, I know. Don't tell Mummy where you're going. I know the drill, honey bunny."
Matty paused, half bewildered, half amused as she stared at her little brother.
"Honey bunny?" She chuckled, stuffing the frilled pink dress her Mum had forced her into in her backpack.
"What? It's something fabulous people say," Her little brother peered at her from his bed, examining her in a friendly-yet-judgemental manner.
"And you're obviously not fabulous." He declared before he burst into bubbles of raucous laughter.
Matty rolled her baby blue eyes after she grabbed the oversized maroon and white jersey off her bed.
"You know, I hate sharing a bedroom with you." The pint-sized fashionista stated, sass never leaving his voice.
"Annnnd, why is that, Ray?" Matty threw the jersey over her head, and headed to the full body mirror near the russet wardrobe.
Not the most flattering... but, hey, at least it was comfortable.
"Honey boo, I told you to call me Nugget from now on. Now you shall do what your eight year old brother says." Ray-- I mean, Nugget, was throwing some damn shade.
"Okay. What is with the nicknames, Nugget?" Matty chortled, throwing the overflowing fluorescent backpack onto her shoulder.
"I'm training to be a fashionista, so I have to automatically call everyone freakin' adorable nicknames." Nugget scurried under his bed and pulled out a bunch of materials, clothing designs, and accessories.
"Look at this one, it's a design of a glamorous lace dress, completed with-"
"I'm sorry, Nugget. I have to go. You know Mum, if I don't come out in at least a few hours, she'll know something's up."
Nugget shook his head and sighed, "Fine. If Mum comes, I'll just say you went to bed early."
He pointed to Matty's bed, which had been filled with pillows to resemble her body.
"Thanks Nugget." Matty smiled weakly, Nugget returning the manner with his own flashing grin.
Matty headed to the rain sprinkled window, heaving it open forcefully, yet silently at the same time as to not disturb her snoozing mother in the other room.
"Wait, Miss Matty-"
"MATANYAH!? WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!?" Matty's mother boomed, her pale face mixed with disgust and shock.
Oh no.
"Mum, I was just-"
"Why are you going out the window? Why are you wearing Ray's jersey?" Venom trickled down her mother's appalled tone, her small beady eyes looking like they were about to pop.
Nugget subtly slid under his bed with his papers.
"It's not Ray's-"
It felt like a minute.
It felt like an hour.
It was actually three seconds.
But in those three seconds, the atmosphere was engulfed with mixed emotions.
Hostility, depression and nostalgia.
Her mum forgot about Matty sneaking out the window.
Her mum forgot about the ugly pink dress that was stuffed ferociously in Matty's backpack.
Her mum forgot about Ray's designs and materials he had been hiding from her.
But she didn't forget the jersey Matty was wearing.
"It's his jersey." Her mum was almost inaudible when she spoke, the bullets of rain tacitly pummelled the silence.
Matty harshly clenched the maroon, soft material between her tiny fists.
It still smelled like him.
"I wear it for good luck..." Matty murmured under her frosty breath.
"Good luck? For what?" Her mother walked toward her totally transformed daughter.
"Football game..."
She observed her daughter.
Well, she observed her in way that looked like she was clueless as to who she was.
She surveyed her in repulse. Repel. Revolt. Outrage. Appal.
"Girls..." Her mother's tone strengthened after digesting what she had just walked in on.
She cleared her throat.
"Girls should not be wearing the opposite gender's garments. Nor should they be participating in physical or educational activities assigned for men-"
"Oh my god, mum! You sound like an email. You should be happy for me. I'm doing something I love. This is who I really am." She pointed towards the faded jersey and rugged soccer boots.
"I'm not some girly, sparkly, perfume infused chick." Matty pulled out the pink dress, and threw it in front of her dissatisfied mother.
"You go girl..." Nugget chanted beneath his bed, clicking his fingers in a cheeky fashion.
Her mother examined Matty up and down again, her face resembling someone who had just been frightened to near death.
Matty held her breath.
And that's when Matty's world came crashing down.
Who knew five simple words, twenty-one basic letters that happened to be sewn together, could demolish someone's life in a split second?
"You're no daughter of mine."
In that night, that rainy night, she closed her eyes for eternity, and ran.
