Ray's point of view
An awkward silence hung in the air, after Lauren had trudged away looking for a water or food source, leaving Ray and Jc alone. She had muttered "boys..." as she left them, although Ray didn't know what she had meant - they hadn't done anything wrong (at least not to his knowledge).
They walked side by side, not really bothering to walk with quiet steps. It's not like they could be much quieter even if they tried.
This is awkward, Ray thought to himself, say something.
"You hungry?" was all he could think to say.
Jc glanced at him to check if he was joking. "Well, yeah. We haven't eaten for days."
Ray's face tinged red with embarrassment. "Me too."
"Um, so, how many tributes left?".
"Eleven, plus us." Ray stared at his shoes as he walked.
Well, this is awkward.
"Guys!" Lauren came up from behind them. "I found a water source - there's a stream nearby."
"Yes!" Jc exclaimed.
But Ray wasn't too sure. Something seemed off about Lauren. She seemed nervous, afraid. Maybe she saw something on her way to the stream?
Lauren glanced at the ground, and when she looked back up, all the nervousness had seeped from her face.
"Jc, why don't you go fill your bottle with water? You can drink as much as you like whilst Ray and I will scout out the area," Lauren glared at him.
"I-I don't think that's a good idea."
"Jc. Go to the stream. It's over there." She pointed the way she had come.
Jc nodded - he had learnt better than to argue with Lauren.
As Jc trudged away, Lauren stared after him, until he was out of sight. She looked Ray in the eyes. What was that on her face? Guilt?
Then she looked over his shoulder, at something behind him. Her eyes widened, her mouth dropped open, she recoiled in horror.
Ray spun around, readying himself to run.
But nothing was there.
He heard a loud sigh, and fell to the ground as he felt a hard punch in the back.
"You really are quite stupid."
He rolled over to see Lauren standing over him, looking at the ground, trying to avoid eye contact. In her hand, she held a knife.
"I'm sorry, Ray."
Ray's eyes widened. "WAIT! Wait, wait. I-I won't betray you if th-that's what you're thinking. I swear. Just, please, don't kill me."
Lauren sighed as she looked up at where Jc had gone, checking to make sure he wasn't back yet. "Listen. I know you won't betray us. You're way too dumb to even think about that." She sighed again. "I didn't find any water, I made it up. And no, I didn't do it to laugh at Jc, although that would've been pretty fun." She added seeing Ray's confused expression. "The point is... I need Jc to win, and I can't let you get in the way." She raised her knife higher, getting ready to strike.
"I won't get in your way, I'll help you let Jc win. Just don't kill me." Ray glanced at the knife. One move and he could die.
Lauren hesitated. "I'm sorry." She raised her arm as high as it could go, then she brought it crashing down.

Ray could've closed his eyes. He could've. But he didn't. He watched the knife fall, fall straight towards his chest.
Then he heard a high-pitched scream. The knife stopped merely an inch from his chest.
He had missed death by an inch.
Lauren jumped up and turned around to get a view of the who, or what, had screamed. A boy and a girl were running full-speed towards them. Their faces were filled with terror. They were running from something. The question was, what? Another high-pitched scream sounded, only, it came from the boy's mouth. Ray almost laughed, almost.
"What's wrong?!" Lauren shouted to them.
The girl's eyes were wide with terror, she was panting, trying to carry on running. Whatever it was they were running from must have been scary.
Only then did Ray notice Lauren was running the way Jc had wondered off, away from whatever the other tributes were running from. He shakily stood up and sprinted after Lauren, not knowing what they were running from.

Strelitzia's point of view
"Wake up, sleepyhead."
Elania's face was not something Strelitzia wanted to wake up to every morning.
She rubbed her eyes and climbed out of her sleeping bag. The birds tweeted, signalling time to wake up - now that was some thing she wanted to wake up to.
"Phoenix and I are going to kill some more petty little tributes, you and Elina guard the camp. Got it?"
Strelitzia nodded in reply and Elania and Phoenix took off into the woods.
"We've got bread for breakfast, and some kind of bird egg," Elina nodded towards a sheet of plastic on the ground, which someone seemed to have dumped their breakfast onto.
"Gee, it looks absolutely delicious."

Strelitzia was surprised at just how nice, and friendly, Elina was. They could have been very good friends if they weren't competing against each other in a death match.
In the short amount of time they had talked, they had found several things in common, including the fact that they were both only on the careers team so they would have the supplies to survive. That lead them to hatch a plan to leave the team together.
This is how it would go down: they would quietly leave at night when they're meant to be keeping watch (it was their shift that night), next try to find Ray's team (who Elina had convinced Strelitzia would help) and get them to help kill the careers. They had spotted his team wandering in a direction earlier, so they were going to follow them that way.
You may ask, why didn't they just kill Phoenix and Elania whilst they were sleeping? Well, for one, Elania was a very light sleeper so the odds of her not waking up were pretty slim. Two, none of them were killers, they didn't want to murder someone, good or bad.

"Ugh, we didn't find any tributes in the area," Elania spoke sullenly.
"Maybe you'll find some tomorrow," Strelitzia implored.
Elania stared at her, trying to read her expression. "Alright, you two keep watch. And don't doze off!" And with that, she and Phoenix snuggled into their cosy sleeping bags and seemed to fall asleep instantly. Well, they started snoring immediately anyway.
The moon washed the land in a gentle light. Stars glittered like a diamond necklace in the black, velvet sky. The trunks of trees were framed against the moon like the bars of a prison. Strelitzia didn't feel at all scared, in fact, she felt somewhat brave.
She glanced over at Elina, who was staring up at the dazzling stars and the stunning moon. Elina looked into her eyes, she didn't look scared either, although she didn't look brave, she looked wistful.
They stared into each other's eyes for a few seconds longer, which made Strelitzia think, is this the right thing to do?
Then Elina nodded. The signal. The plan was on.
They both stood up, weapons of choice in their hands. Then they took off, like wolves chasing after their prey.
It's going pretty well so far, she thought to herself, they haven't woken up yet.
But something had to go wrong. She heard a loud crackling noise. And what was that smell? Smoke?
Before she knew it, a forest fire was raging towards them. Tree after tree it tore down. Nothing could stand in its way.
All the commotion woke Phoenix and Elania up. The were already out of their sleeping bags, although they were clearly annoyed at being woken up before morning.
"You two idiots were meant to keep watch for any danger!" Elania screamed. "Does that not look like danger to you?" She gestured towards the fire.

The careers had probably just assumed The Games would go their way, that there wouldn't be any obstacle they couldn't overcome. Turns out there was, and it came in the form of a forest fire.
Being so unprepared for this situation, Strelitzia and her team were chaotic. They were running everywhere (only Elina was actually running away from the fire); none of them knew what to do. They didn't even think to save their supplies from the fire, which they should have considering they were pretty useless without them (anyone was).
She gasped for air (the smoke from the fire was not helping), bending her head towards the ground in exhaustion. Then she saw her. Running as far away as possible from Elania and Phoenix. Running the way they had discussed. Her dark hair was flying behind her. The plan was still on. Elina was running toward Ray's team. Strelitzia made an attempt to follow, only to realise her sleeve had caught onto a branch. She successfully yanked it free, only to become face to face with a horrifying sight. The raging fire as it consumed her - in one bite.

Leo's point of view
Water. He needed water.
He could barely put one foot in front of the other; he felt light-headed with exhaustion. Unable to walk another step, he slithered to a halt. His throat was parched and his breath was coming in painful gasps.
With nothing else to do, he unzipped his backpack and started setting up a tent that he found in his backpack.

It turned out the tent was made for a very small kid, or perhaps even a dog. He barely fit in it, but it was all he had, so he had to make the most out of it.
He contemplated going to look for a nearby source of food, and in the end his hunger got the best of him.

Berries! Lots of berries! He ran, as if in slow motion, towards them. His mouth dropped open, his hand grabbed some berries... Wait. What if they were poisonous? Should he eat them? It's not like he had much of a choice anyway, if he didn't eat something, he'd die. Should he risk it? Should he risk his life, or should he wait several more painful hours until dawn?
Once again, hunger got the best of him, and so he swallowed.
He immediately felt a deep feeling of regret. He shouldn't have done that. That was a stupid thing to do. He destroyed his chance of winning. He practically committed suicide. He-
But nothing. Nothing happened. He blinked a few times, to make sure he wasn't dead. He wasn't. He was alive. Alive with a new source of food. He felt like jumping up and down and screaming with joy- Okay, maybe not screaming, then the other tributes would know where he was, but he did jump up and down.
He stuffed as many berries as possible into his mouth. They melted on his tongue, filling his whole mouth with an overwhelming, delicious taste. It brought back memories of the times he and his family had spent exploring the woods in his district.
And with that thought, he crawled inside his kiddy-sized tent and fell asleep - surprisingly fast.

Leo woke to something very strange. His vision was fuzzy, but he was wearing his glasses. As he stepped out from his tent, something even stranger met his eyes. The trees around him appeared to be drooping down, as if someone had purposely bent them in half.
That's not normal, is it?
But that wasn't it. He looked down at his hands to see a deeply worrying sight. Everything - including his hands - appeared as if they had been distorted in Photoshop.
The berries.
He should have known not to eat those berries. He should have known. Suddenly, it felt like a poison had taken root in his stomach, seeping through his veins and spreading to the back of his throat. The worst thing wasn't that he was dying, it was that he had killed himself. He hadn't even been killed by another tribute, he had been killed by his own stupidity. He had had a fighting chance, but he wasted it.
The pain took control of him, as it tore through his head and left him bent double and writhing in agony.
The only thought in his mind was: you were killed by your own stupidity.

Lauren's point of view
A forest fire. That's what they were running from. Lauren hadn't bothered to check if Ray was following, after all, she had tried to kill him. She was sure the girl they had seen was Pixie - they had met in the training centre. She wasn't sure who the boy was though.
She looked over her shoulder; Ray had started running and wasn't too far behind. Pixie and the boy were close behind him. They were far enough ahead of the fire, but they couldn't stop, it would only catch up to them soon.
She slowed down to let the others catch up to her.
"Lauren!" Ray panted as he came up next to her. "Where's Jc?"
Jc! With all the drama she had forgotten all about him.
"Um, he went this way. We should find him soon." She bit her lip.

They ran for another five minutes; the fire didn't slow down one bit.
The only sounds to be heard were the crackling fire, panting, and the occasional moan of exhaustion (those came from the boys). The calming tweets from birds and rustling bushes were gone completely gone - it worried Lauren.
She was so tired she could barely walk, but she kept on moving, dragging her feet across the ground, shoulders stooped.
"Ray! Lauren! Uh, who-" Jc's sentence was broken off by Ray running into him and trying to push him away from the fire.
They all stopped for a second, with their hands on their knees, gasping for air.
"Long story short, there's a forest fire. And we have to run," Pixie spoke in between breaths.
"And you are?" Jc raised one eyebrow at Pixie and her friend.
"Pixie. This is Wolfie," she nodded to the guy next to her. He stared blankly at Jc.
"Nice to meet you. Uh, you said something about running?"
"Yes," Lauren butted in. "We have to run now, idiot."
And so they took off once again, Lauren in the lead, the rest in tow.

Half an hour or so later, Pixie shouted for them to stop. She slumped with her hands on her knees, gasping for breath; when she eventually spoke, her voice was a low, painful wheeze.
"I can't go any further." She slid down against a tree, her eyes closed.
Wolfie put his hand on her shoulder. "She was shot in the leg, earlier."
Lauren nodded. "We're probably far enough ahead."
She fell onto the ground and rested her head on a patch of moss. Ray and Jc sat next to each other, resting against tree trunks, talking in low murmurs. The moon was directly above her in the sky.
She let her eyelids flicker shut as she got a sudden impulse to drift off to sleep. And she didn't resist it.

Then she woke up to the thought of letting someone she hadn't even met, keep watch over her team. How had she been so stupid?
She quickly closed her eyes as she felt a hand on her shoulder. She slowed her breathing and pretended not to notice the hand on her shoulder.
"I know you're awake."
She sat up quickly and narrowed her eyes at Wolfie. "Your point being?"
"You can trust me, you know. Besides, I would never kill anyone friendly in front of Pixie."
She looked over at Pixie, she was fast asleep, as were Ray and Jc. Judging by the moon's position, it had been about one and a half hours since she'd fallen asleep.
"Yeah, 'cause you're a gentleman that way." She rolled her eyes. "Listen here, I don't trust you, and I never will. So if you're keeping watch so am I."
Wolfie shrugged. "Fine by me."

Jc's point of view
Jc was kind of embarrassed to be the last one awake. Lauren, Ray, Wolfie and Pixie sat around the fire, along with another girl, whom Jc hadn't met before.
Even tributes not on this team are awake before me.
He walked a little closer to them, hiding from view behind a tree, they were all sitting in a circle. With a closer look, Jc identified the girl as Elina, the girl Ray had originally wanted on their team.
After getting a sniff of their food - roasted squirrels - he came out into view.
"And there he is!" announced Lauren, grinning.
A few people wished him good morning, and offered him roasted squirrel, which he took gratefully.
Pixie told him about how Wolfie had hunted all the squirrels earlier that morning.
Wolfie interrupted, going on about how "it was nothing".
Jc got a bad feeling about that guy, he didn't like him one bit.
Through the whole thing, Elina sat there awkwardly, avoiding eye contact. Until Ray introduced her. "Oh, I nearly forgot. Jc, Elina. Elina, Jc." He clapped his hands together.
"Nice to meet you," Elina nodded at him. Jc nodded back.
"It's kind of a long story how she ended up here," Ray carried on. "We can tell you later."
Jc nodded again. "So, we're all a team now?"
"Yep," Pixie smiled. Although, Lauren didn't look too happy.

After lots and lots more chatting, they all decided the best move would be finding food and water, so they can get their strength back before facing the careers.
"Alright," Elina started. "I know where we can get water, I'll take the bottles down there and fill them up."
"I'll come with you," Ray instantly added.
"Great," Wolfie nodded. "Pixie, why don't you go with Lauren and find some food?"
Pixie shrugged. "Sure."
Wait, what? Jc asked himself. Does that mean I'm stuck here with him?
Lauren glared at Wolfie. "If you think I'm leaving Jc alone with you, then think again."
"Lauren, I'll be fine, really."
Really? Really? No, not really, you're going to die!
Lauren sighed at Jc, then glared one more time at Wolfie, before following Pixie into the woods.
Jc was trembling with fear, he glanced timidly at Wolfie, his inner voice continuing to shout "you're going to die!" again and again.
Once everyone was out of sight, Wolfie turned to Jc. But he wasn't smiling creepily, or holding a knife, he simply looked bored.
"Want some more squirrel?" was all he said.

Elina's point of view
It's no wonder people go mad in The Games. Everything that had happened so far was making Elina feel mad herself.
"I'm sorry for not joining your team when you asked me to." She stopped in her tracks.
Ray stopped a few steps ahead of her. "It's okay. I probably wouldn't have joined my team if I were you, either." He frowned. "Not that I think about being you or anything."
She looked down at her shoes. At least some people couldn't be changed by the arena; he was the same, awkward Ray.
"Hey, why do you think Wolfie told Pixie to go with Lauren? I thought he didn't trust her at all."
She looked up at Ray, his face was full of concern.
"I don't know. I don't really know Wolfie..."
They both stood there for a second, collecting their thoughts.
Ray's eyes widened, his face lit up with alarm. "You don't think...?"
Wolfie's going to kill Jc.
They both immediately sprinted like tigers back to the camp.
But they weren't fast enough.
Boom!
