I tend to agree with this, but technically the void did kill them. This could also mean a lot more bugs. For example, say you and another person hit someone, they run away, and later that person falls, who gets the kill? You or the other person? It's probably best the way it is.

This is why Microsoft absolutely sucks. I hope they know they ruined Minecraft for all the 4-9 year olds who don't have an xbox live account, and if they do, it's a child account and they can't access servers anyway. It's possible that the parents don't know how or aren't willing to fix this...
