I don't think so. Once you're a crew leader, you will always have to remain the crew leader I believe. You could suggest this idea if you want at the suggestions tab.

Those are the non-active staff pets. They are just there for fun I guess. As for gems, you can get Red, Yellow, Blue, or Green gems. They are used to get free buffs (2x Exp/Coins) and to get free effects from the Cosmetic Shop.
