Strange... I do that with my iPad all the time, it's almost 4 years old and the battery can still work perfectly, holding charge for at least 14 hours while the screen is on. It doesn't drain at all when It's turned off.

My phone works fine while charging.
If I use my iPad while charging, I have to keep it still, resting on something instead of holding it. But I don't like to use it while charging because it's only a matter of time before I ruin it.
I had to get a new charger for it because the old one stopped working after I used the iPad while charging it. It said it wasn't compatible with the charger
