Jean Baptiste de Lamarck thought that the evolution of an animal depends on if it has a use for specific body parts or functions or if it doesn't. So if a Giraffe would have a longer neck it was able to reach the leaves easier than one with a short one and this giraffe would give its abilities to its kids.
Charles Darwin had the theory "survival of the fittest"
every individual that has the best abilities for its environment would survive and every other animal of the same species would die.
So the giraffes with long neck had a better chance to survive because they had no problem to get their food, while the giraffes with the short neck had difficulties.
