No, at first, Spike genuinely wanted a staff position. He was innocent, and only had that one goal. However, the community turned against. When he started helping a little "too" much, people began to call him out as a tryhard.

This shattered him and his dreams.

He took it. For a while, he sat there and took the hate and the pain, but after so long of being hated upon, you're bound to break - which is what happened to Spike. He broke down and became a hateful person, himself. He hated upon those who hated him. Yet, he was the only one who was hated upon, who was ganged up upon.
