Has anybody else ever thought about how weird the phrase 'thank you' is?

I mean we say it as if it's a command. "Thank you." That sounds like you're instructing somebody to thank him/herself, except you totally forget that it would be 'yourself' instead of 'you.'
Plus it's just plain weird in its use. Plus... if thanking is showing gratitude by saying 'thank you,' then... isn't it pretty much meaningless? Doesn't that mean that saying 'thank you,' is pretty much just saying, "I am showing my gratitude by saying thank you, which shows my gratitude by saying thank you."
